It’s10pm and my bun is acting sick. Need advice!

My bun is free range, and when she’s tired she lays on our bed or under our bed.  Tonight she flopped in her litter box, which was odd.  Soon after,we gave her dinner .. her usual bowl of veggies, and she didn’t want to eat. She just layed down next to her dish, and her ears were shaking a bit.  We gave her some love, and she calmed down a bit and ate a few greens, but then layed down again.  I cleaned out her litter box so I can see if she’s pooping.  I always add fresh hay when I clean it out, which she loves, and that enticed her to come over and try some hay, but she layed down again in her litter box.  This is not normal for her.  Debating if I call the vet because it’s after hours.  Also, she hates to be picked up, and I usually bribe her with food into her carrier to take her to the vet, so I don’t even know how I’m going to get her there.  She’s only 3 years old, and has never acted this way before.  It’s really scaring me.  So far, no poop, but it’s only been an hour since I cleaned her box.

I would take her to the vet! For a rabbit it can be deadly to go even 8-10 hours without eating/pooping so overnight could be too long to wait. Can you feel her belly? If it is hard definitely take her in right away as she probably has a blockage. Better safe than sorry. You know your bun and if you know she is feeling unwell I would at least call the vet to get their opinion or go to an emergency clinic that will see rabbits!

Earlier she was lying with her legs stretched out, but now she’s in her loaf position. Still waiting for her to poop. I’m going to call the vet and just see if someone can call me back. It’s 11pm here now.

Do you have some simethicone at home? Infant gas drops or adult Gas x liquid capsules?
Sometimes it can help… And it doesn’t hurt to give to them.

I wound up calling the vet hospital after my last post. When I went to check on her, she was laying in the corner of our room, facing the wall, and quivering. Then, she hopped in her litter box, and raised her tail like she does when she poops, but nothing came out. She was also grinding her teeth when trying to poop. She was even refusing treats, which she usually goes crazy for. She was just acting really sick.

The vet who is on tonight, isn’t an exotic vet, but she does have experience with bunnies. She seemed very competent and thorough. She did an x-ray, and luckily, no blockage. There were a lot of gas pockets. Her feeling was that if it is stasis, we caught it early. They are going to keep her overnight to give her sub-q fluids and syringe feed her. We can’t do it because she doesn’t like to be picked up, and just runs under the bed, so to syringe feed her would be nearly impossible. I was always afraid the day would come where not being able to pick her up would be a huge problem. In any case, I’m glad I took her, and I’m hoping and praying they can resolve the problem and we can bring her home. Her regular vet, who is licensed in exotics, is going to see her when she comes in at 9:00.

Thank you. She is still in the hospital. The vet called me this afternoon and said she was refusing food and only pooped 2 little pellets. I took her favorite veggies to the hospital, and they said she sniffed them and walked away. I also have this stuff called sun salad which she goes crazy for, and they said she tried a tiny bit of that, but no more. They are going to continue treatment overnight tonight, and if nothing changes by morning, they will do another belly scan and some blood work.

I just don’t understand it. The evening she became ill, she was fine all day. It seemed to come on so suddenly. I always thought with stasis (if that’s truly what this is), there would be a little more warning. I hope and pray she comes through this. She is our baby, and I don’t want to lose her.

Sounds like a serious gas problem, maybe a tummy massage and like others said baby gas drops

Stasis can come on very quickly. That’s why it’s so important to understand what’s normal for your rabbit and what isn’t.

Are they syringe feeding her at all?

Stasis is the stopping of the gut – no input and no output. If she’s not eating or pooping she’ll need motility drugs and force feeding.
