Hi, Nabbit, our 9mo Dutch buck seems to have an issue with his ears. Just this past week I rubbed them along the edges and he went nuts licking the floor and then frantically started washing his ears as though I had triggered an unstoppable itch. I looked closer and noticed that all along the very edge of his ear he has very dry skin that almost feels a little built up. His mate is always grooming his ears as well, as if she knows they bother him.
He went to see the vet only a couple weeks ago and she thoroughly checked his ears over and said they looked perfect even though I had noticed him regularly itching them. He was diagnosed with some kind of allergy at the time though.
I hesitate to put any ointment on them to ease the itch because I don’t want him to get his coat all messy or ingest something harmful. I’ve tried researching the issue but come up with nothing. I am hoping someone else on here might have seen a similar issue.
Does anyone have any thoughts or solutions to ease his discomfort?

A lot can develop in a couple weeks, so while it may have looked fine then, things could have changed now. I’d bring him back, stating the distinct difference in appearance. It could be some sort of infection that has now progressed to a stage where it’s discernible to your vet.

In terms of “allergy”, what allergy have you narrowed it down to, and did the vet propose any course of action against it?

Try taking a little flashlight and taking a peek in his ears. Do you notice any buildup, wax or redness?

He looks perfect on the inside of the ears. The stuff on the outside edge appears a little like dandruff and is only along the very edge between front and back side.
The vet felt like his allergy (which occasionally gives him sneeze attacks) was related to some kind of fragrance in cleaning products. We have tried to removed anything of that nature from the house and he seems better.

My little Bridge girl, Olivia used to get really dry spots on the outside of her ears. All over, but especially on the tips. Vet checked and negative for fur mites. I would take a soft little baby brush and very gently brush the flakes off. She loved it and would tooth purr. Then I would take a tiny dab of mineral oil on a Q-tip and massage it into the dry spots. It seemed to help.

That sounds very much like what we are dealing with! Great idea, thanks!
