Hey everyone! I have a question about food quantity. Recently, I’ve been very cautious about how much I’m feeding Wick because I had to go through a period of about 2 weeks on Critical Care due to him being underweight. I felt very guilty, so I want to ensure he’s getting enough to eat.

        Wick:
        • 5mo Netherland Dwarf male, not neutered (too soon)
        • I forget his most current weight, but I believe he weighs slightly more than 1lb. He had a vet visit yesterday, and he’s confirmed to be a healthy weight.

        His current routine:
(unlimited hay and water; hay rotated and sifted in fresh hay bi-daily)
        – 1/2 serving of veggies at 6:30AM
        – 1 serving of pellets at 4:00PM
        – 1/2 serving of veggies at 8:30PM
        — His total daily veggies fills up a cereal bowl (approx. 5 leaves of romaine chopped, 1 stalk of celery, and some variety item which rotates per week. This week it’s parsley and grapes). His total pellets is about 1/5 cup (approx because our scooper doesn’t have a measurement indication).

I expected him to lose a little weight after we stopped Critical Care, and I was relieved he’s a healthy weight now. He lost a very small amount a weight and my vet said it was fine, since he was coming off of getting so much Critical Care a week and a half ago. I want to make sure he doesn’t start to lose weight again because I’m feeding too little. Typically when feeding in the morning, is your rabbit completely full? Wick is still pretty hungry after receiving half the daily veggie servings in the morning, and on one hand I know he’ll get more throughout the day, but on the other hand, I’m wondering if it’s because he’s not getting enough?

Rabbits should always act like they’re hungry. My Bam is chubby, but if you ask him it’s always been ages since he had any food.

The vegs you give him is more bulk and water than calories. They’re good, rabbit appropriate vegs, and fiber is great for the tum, but it won’t help up his weight. For that you’ll need to give him more pellets or sth extra like rolled oats. I can only suggest you monitor his weight closely, like weigh him twice a week and write the weight down. That way you can keep close track of fluctuations and you can quickly intervene if the trend is negative.

            — Thanks for the reply Bam! It’s good to hear that hungry behavior isn’t uncommon. While feeding him Critical Care, I was told to keep feeding until he didn’t eat anymore, so it began to concern me that he wasn’t completely full at each his feedings sans Critical Care. Is there any scale which works best for weighing rabbits? With Wick being pretty complex healthwise, I would like to get a scale for him.

I use “normal” kitchen scales with an accuracy of 1 gram. I place Bam in a kitchen bowl for weighing.

Luna has the same feeding routine everyday, and will act like she’s starving until she gets her scheduled veggies and pellets. She also hops around my feet whenever she sees me grab more hay. She’s always been like that, and she’s always been a healthy weight. And if she happens to still be hungry after breakfast, she always has a freshly topped off full hay feeder to go to.

Bam in a bowl on a kitchen scale – too cute! (picturing it in my mind lol)
