I had a friend come over recently. And they told me that my bunnies need more room! I didn’t know how to respond to that. They are in exercise pens made for dogs. And my girl does a lot of zoomies in hers. Sometimes she binkies! But they are 4ft by 4ft which I know is the bare minimum. They do get playtime when it’s not too hot or too cold in the basement. But it’s been hard because our basement has gotten quite damp from all the rain. I wish I could free roam but I can’t. So is this set-up ok?

Are you talking about for permanent set up (“home base”), or exercise space? And do you have 1 bunny or two?

A 4 x 4 pen OK for 2 bonded bunnies for a home base but it is not big enough if they spend 100% of their time there (the HRS guidelines are 8 sq ft the cage, and 24 sq ft for exercise). Buns should get at least a few hours of exercise per day in a larger space, and honestly more than 24 sq ft is better if you can. You just want the bun to be able to get up to full running speed if they want to. Usually a bunny-proofed room is plenty, and it’s good to time exercise for when they are most active (morning and/or evening).

Where are the pens located? Would it be possible to bunny proof the room and give them a couple hours of supervised roam time in that room each day? Or to attach a second pen for exercise time so they can get a bit more space for zoomies?

All of that said, we do the best we can, and sometimes temporary situations are not perfect. It’s possible to make smaller improvements over time. When I lived in a smaller place, I built my buns a condo with multiple levels so they could have more sq ft and some interest, so that’s an option too.

Sorry for the late reply! I had a virus on my laptop and it couldn’t be fixed until recently. It’s more of a “home base”, unless it’s too hot or cold. Like I said they mostly play in the basement when the weather is just right. I have 2 buns but had to separate them since my girl was making sure my boy didn’t get any hay and am trying to re-bond them. Then pens are located in my room since it’s the only place my dad’s dog and my 3 year old half sister isn’t allowed. My room is small, I’m not sure the exact size but there’s not enough room to give them free roam and again they are separate currently until I can re-bond them.

Ok great! Yes if it’s just a home base and they get exercise in a larger area then that’s fine. 🙂
