Is there hope?

   Hello, Have your ever seen a 7 yo rabbit come out of a paralysis of legs as they continue to eat and drink with syringe? It has been  24 hours from our visit to the ER and TX. We see no improvement and a bit of grunting with some breaths. We wonder if Arla will  ever get out of this moderate paralysis of her limbs.  She does eat and drink but we also see she may be suffering for no quality of living/hope.  Thank you. Chris

Hello and thank you all for the responses I am sitting here crying as I type this unfortunatily this morning we took her to be put down. The vet did not know what the diagnosis was and said we had to do blood work in order to find out, which we did not have the money for. So we decided to take her home and see if she would get better. This morning I woke up to check on her to find that she had lost the use of her head as well and also she had been eating fine this whole time now she wouldn’t eat. When we took her to be put down the vet said it would probably be best. I am now very worried about her litter mate; Austa who has bonded to her. He seems very depressed and when I came out to feed hom he freaked out and started running around his cage in a panic. Please let me know your thoughts on this and what I should do?

Oh, I’m so sorry – she is now at the bridge and whole again. I think just give Austa lots of hugs and attention and see how he does. Keep his routine as close as possible too – rabbits find comfort in routine too.

Such a sad situation but even though she isn’t with you,she is healthy and binky free. Find comfort in that and that you will see her again. Austa is going to need your comfort and love. Focus on keeping things normal for him and give him extra kisses from all of us. Keep us posted on him.

Should I let Austa say goodbye to Arla or should I just burry her?

If you still have Aria’s body it might be a good idea. Don’t be disappointed though if Austa doesn’t seem to be responding or ignoring her but it’s worth a try – it helps some rabbits and some rabbits just don’t respond…

So sorry to hear about Aria. It is so hard to make the decision to put down, but if it is any comfort, it sounds like you made the best caring choice for her.
If you still have her body, try to keep it with Austa for about three hours, so Austa will know that she is gone and hasn’t just disappeared. Give him lots of attention, too.

Awe so sorry for your loss. When Sally’s brother died she too did an odd panic. Darting around her cage and thumping a lot. She seemed terrified being alone. Her brother was the social one and she was shy. So I think she relied heavily on him for comfort. But she came around again pretty soon after that. And without her brother to comfort her, she seemed to rely on us more for her comfort. Which was nice because before that we couldn’t touch her. And now she’s very happy again with Harley. She seemed to bond to Harley really fast (love at first sight bonding) I think she missed having another bun around for comfort and company.

Sally didn’t get to say goodbye to her brother. But I think she knew he was sick. I think she might have reacted better knowing he was in fact dead and not just suddenly disappeared. But I didn’t think it at the time. I thought I was protecting her removing her sick brother from the cage to dye a ‘peaceful’ death in my lap. I didn’t want her seeing it. But she probably would’ve liked the closure.

Oh no…. I am so sorry for your loss.

It sounds like she had a great life with you and Austa. She was lucky to have you. I think you made the right decision in letting her go. Even with treatment, she may or may not have regained mobility and her quality of life would have decreased… Letting her go peacefully was the best thing you could have done for her, but I know it’s still so hard… Hugs for you and kisses for Austa…
