I’m hoping I’m overreacting but this morning I woke up to a towel in the rabbits cage that is stained dark orange sort of.

We recently got a puppy so I’m hoping it’s just them peeing on the towel for territorial…ness but how do I know if it’s blood in their pee instead? It’s a darker orange than their normal “pee” colour but I’m not sure if it’s just the other rabbit who doesn’t normally. And how do I tell which of the two rabbits it would have been

I have a 2.5 year old neutered male and 1 year old spayed female. I picked them both up and their bum areas are clean and don’t look bloody or anything

fyi: the towels are a light yellow and this picture doesn’t really show quite how orange it looks but it doesn’t look like dried blood either

Totally forgot to mention, they’re both acting completely fine, eating and drinking

Update: Thank the Lord, I just found this link http://www.medirabbit.com/EN/Uro_gen_diseases/generalities/Sludge.htm and it looks like the top left one which it says is ok… I’ll still keep an eye on them but I feel some relief

I’m glad you found that link! This is not a sign of anything wrong. Rabbit pee can come in many different colors and hues and still be perfectly normal. In fact, rabbits should never have clear, colorless pee. The orange color most often comes from plant pigments, f ex in dandelion greens or carrots, but the bun can also spontaneously produce the reddish pigment.

Sometimes there is blood in pee though, but it tends to be in specks or centered to the middle of the pee puddle. You can test if its blood with hydrogen peroxide. If it’s blood, the peroxide foams (and it foams a lot). it won’t foam if there’s no blood.
