        Hi all

New to the forum, so hoping for some advice about my rabbit. He is 2 yrs old, was neutered in March so 7 months ago. We rescued him in June so 4 months ago. I took him to a rescue shelter to try out some rabbits for bonding. I left him with the shelter and I got a call from the owner who said she thinks he’s still hormonal even though he’s been neutered for some time. He kept humping all the rabbits and she said he was excited (so not just dominant behaviour). She said it might be that he just has to be a solo bun, that it happens sometimes that they keep expressing hormones.

I’m so sad he can’t have a friend! We wanted another because we work full time and don’t always have the chance to spend a lot of time with him when we work. I am wondering if others have encountered this and if it’s permanent or if others have had success bonding a hormonal neutered rabbit? I read because it’s spring he might just be like that because it’s the season. Also, he never humped anything at home and doesn’t show other hormonal tendencies?

Appreciate any advice, or even reassurance!

Going on speed dates at the shelter is a very exciting thing, and humping can be expected. Usually there are more issues with rabbits that are outright aggressive towards other rabbits (and I even know of some of those who were deemed unbondable that years later bonded easily to the right rabbit).

I’ve noticed a big decrease in mounting during bonding sessions after a pre-bonding period, where the rabbits can get used to each other’s scents and presence before actually interacting a lot. If you are willing to do the bonding yourself, you could ask the shelter about fostering the bun he seemed to get along with the best (maybe the most submissive one), and then do some pre-bonding with them.

And I agree spring can make a difference! (Assuming you are in the southern hemisphere?)
