Maybe he is being apprehensive? Like… ‘are you going to leave me and have me restricted again’??? Sadly, we can’t verbally tell them, and I can’t think of any way for you to show your Henry that it was a one off and that he needs not to worry. I am in no way suggesting that anyone should forgo having a life or holidays, but the hubby and I don’t for that simple reason – no one looks after our pets like we do. The longest we have ever been away since getting our Henry is overnight, and short of giving him his veggie’s early, a top up of pellets and hay – we left him like we would if we go out to get the groceries… free roam with the dog’s. To lock him away would have caused distress cause that’s not what he’s used to.
Our Henry would not of missed any pats or cuddle’s – he’s very obnoxious, DOH! But he would miss our company – he thrives on ours and the dog’s company. I think it comes down to how you raise and live with them.
I don’t think it’s depression, I think more apprehension???
Give it a while for him to feel secure again and that he is not going to be left and fed. I’m super sure he’ll show the love again.
I can’t imagine how awful it may have been for him being shut away for 3 weeks – it must have felt like forever to him and not knowing that you were coming home to free him? Gosh, sorry – I do NOT want to make you feel bad, but this is what I do…. I see it from the animals point of view. I’m one of those do onto others as you would yourself.
