Today Kahleigh and Tonne got spayed and neutered. Tonne is doing well and eating everything he is fed but my female Kahleigh has only eaten 3 basil leaves and a few pieces of green leaf lettuce. Is it time for the critical care? Is this normal? She got her dose of metacam at the vet at about 4:00 pm it’s now 1 AM so it’s been about 9 hours since. I have her in a comfy soft padded version of her cage with a hot water bottle wrapped in a fleece cover. She still hasn’t pooped since she got home. She got fluids at the vet. She hasn’t drank water since she got home but the veggies were freshly washed with some water still on them. Any thoughts? Thanks all.

It’s great that she’s eaten something, even if it’s not much. I would consider it time for critical care. Then bun should have gotten sth in her tummy before she goes to sleep for the night, or she might have trouble keeping her body temp up. (Buns can get hypothermic post anesthesia, that’s very dangerous).

Because she got fluids at the vet she probably won’t drink until tomorrow, especially if you give her Critical Care and wet greens.

Metacam has a duration of 12-24 hours, normally you give one dose per 24 hours, so she should still have pain relief from the dose the vet gave her.

Ooops, didnt see this separate post…. glad they’re both home and Tonne already eating. Blokes have a much less invasive procedure of course.

And its great that Kahleigh is nibbling. Try a.n.y.t.h.i.n.g…. mine had a shreddies (piece of breakfast cereal)
Honestly i dont think Zou ate until the next day but she was SO out of it and had a complicated spay op…
How about a barley ring (got a spare horse anywhere?!) or anything naughty she’s never had (a cornflake, bit of bread, banana skin?) to tempt her.
No harm in C’ing now if you are in ANY doubt.

Poops and wees will come later for Kahleigh

UPDATE: Kahleigh has begun pooping but they don’t look very good. They are mushy and shapeless with a cecotropes smell. She then proceeded to smash her poos with her big feet but that’s a whole different situation. She has eaten veggies off and on through the night, a piece of pepper, a piece of basil, some parsley trying to sleep didn’t go well for me so I just stayed up with her. I also tried to feed her some critical care but only got maybe 5 ml of critical care paste in her. She has also only had maybe a nibble of hay. I may try some of her favorite oxbow cookies. Thanks Bam and Vienna ?

It sounds good so far Poop can be irregular for two weeks after a spay. It has to do with the gut slowing under anesthesia. It’s very common that we don’t get as much CC into our buns as we would like -a lot tends to end up on the bunny and on your own clothes. But as long as some of it gets into the bun, it’s a success.

Ha! Yes it was all over my clothes! This is my first CC feeding so it was not so smooth. The metacam feeding went better though. She is chewing on her fleece blanket and I am trying everything to get her to stop but she just seems to want nothing but the blanket. I don’t want to take it because it’s hers and it’s a comfort thing but I don’t want her to get hurt from eating blanket ? Thoughts?

Well the good thing about fleece is that it has no fibres, so she won’t have long fibres causing intestinal issues, but I’m not sure 100% fleece diet is very good…. but it sounds as if she’s been eating quite well for the first night…. yes, poops seemed to take ages getting back to ball-bearing imitations !!! The important thing is she is pooping !!!

That does make me feel a little better! Lol she has been eating a few veggies and a few different kinds of hay. Shes refusing water though. I am so just hoping I’m doing everything right! There are so many things to worry about.

Update: My husband figured out why Kahleigh kept chewing her blanket. She usually has cardboard boxes she chews on. He gave her a piece of a box and she only wanted that from then on ?

She’d love a willow branch! I have apple sticks somewhere around here. Ha ha. I’ll find them sometime today I’m sure! She is such a chewer!
