Is it okay to buy hay online? and if so, where?

Hey everyone! 

So, I really want to try to find somewhere online that sell bulk hay!

Hay where I live is very very expensive and you only get alittle bit, its a harsh waste of money. Well not a waste cause its for the buns. But for 24 oz of hay here in Ohio is about 10 dollars give or take and that will only last about 2 or 3 days, my bunnies devour hay! For the 48 oz bags of kaytee timothy hay it is close to 20 dollars. 48 oz of hay will last exactly one week..maybe!! they munch away like crazy!! So, i am spending $20 a week on just hay! which I will continue to do it if I have too. Does anyone know of any cheaper online options?

Im slightly hesistant to buy hay online only because Im not %100 sure of its source and if it gets mites sitting in a warehouse or something. Or how “fresh” is the hay purchased online. 

Does anyone purchase bulk bags of hay online? If so, where do you purchase it from and is it good and fresh hay?

Hay should not be so expensive, its… hay! But i live in the city.. what can i do? lol!

I buy my hay online! 

Hopefully this is not breaking the rules about advertising here (?), but I order from small pet select. The hay I receive from them has always been great quality, and ship free to the US if you buy more than $30. You can get up to 60lbs I think at a time, I’ve been getting 20lb boxes. I think getting hay this way may be the same or even fresher than getting it at the pet store, since in that case you also know it has been sitting in farms and then in the bag for quite some time.

I just started buying on subscription from Small Pet Select. It works out to around $2 or $2.5 per pound, and includes shipping. I’m buying a 10lb box every second month. Once I’v used up my current bale and box, I’ll see how often I need to get the subscription hay.

I buy most of my hay online at Drs. Foster & Smith. I get mostly smaller bags, but they have up to 50 pound bags of Oxbow, timothy and orchard grass. They also sell 5 pound bags of American Pet Diner Hay, which I like a lot. Their prices are good, certainly better than pet stores, and they have sales too. Right now, they have free shipping with a $19 purchase. Sometimes it is with an order of $29, sometimes it is with an order of $49, and occasionally they have free shipping no matter what size order you have. The items arrive quickly and they have always been fresh. Their products are guaranteed in any case.

Ohh you guys rock!! Petselect is awesome!! 10 pounds of hay for $29 dollars. If i do the math correctly 48 oz is 3 pounds! I have been paying $20 dollars for 3 pounds of hay, so for 10 pounds of kaytee petsmart hay Ive been paying $60 dollars , ohh my goodness!!! I cant believe it! Thats to much money! Petselect is gonna save me tons of money!! and by the pics they show it looks way greener and healthier then the hay i buy! My buns will be soo happy!

I purchase Luna’s hay (9 lb. Oxbow Orchard for $23.37) from Chewy.com. If you qualify for the free shipping, it’s cheaper than SPS, and I haven’t found any dead grasshoppers in the hay.

Lol! that is really cheap too!! Im gonna check out chewy.com, cause i believe ive seen ads like on google for chewy.com and that is a great deal for oxbow hay. Tomorrow im gonna order new hay and then go to the pet store and buy a little bit of there current hay till new hay arrives and then mix the hays untill they are on new hay completely!
I am sooo excited to be saving so much money, i cant beleive ive been paying $60 dollars for 10 pounds of hay, anndd the pet store only sells 3 pounds at a time, so ive been wasting gas as well, driving to the pet store once a week for 3 pounds of hay! booo! Thanks for the input, so excited, hope the bunnies like theyre new hay!

I will say that I had to put an unexpected order in that was under $49 (so no free 1-2 day shipping), and it took about 6 days to arrive. But every other time I make sure my order is at least $49 so I get the free 1-2 day shipping, and it’s always arrived within 1-2 days.

I get mine from Sierra Valley Hay online, and the quality is AMAZING, better than any other I’ve found (bunnies like it a lot more than Oxbow). Prices are reasonable too.
