Is an IKEA expedit a good size for a bunny cage?

My first bun has a small corner in my room, in which there is a built in cupboard that will be built into a run, and my original plan was to bond my bunnies and have both of them in there, but after the bonding session not going so well, I’ve been thinking of alternatives… Even if I do manage to bond them, I think I’d feel a little more at ease if they lived separately, so I won’t worry every 5 minutes that they’re fighting… Not to mention Binky is currently in a pet store sized cage and constantly shakes the bars as it is way too small, and bonding can take months and I don’t want to keep her in there much longer… So I’ve decided to extend the bunny castle and build her her own space next to his, with a little mesh window they can sniff each other through! I’ve had my eye on this unit from IKEA, it’s fairly cheap and won’t cost me much to build, I can drill holes and build steps and add doors to make it into a run/condo… But I was wondering if it was enough? They’re both let out in my room a few hours each day, so they have plenty of running space, but I don’t have the space in my room to extend this out for running space within her cage, I can just work with the actual unit…

It’s hard to tell the exact dimensions and may be a little on the narrow side? (Could you fit the width of toys and litter boxes in?) Bunnies usually prefer to have lots of running space on single levels, but since they’re getting plenty of exercise outside the cage I’m sure they’d love to peer from up high.

How big are your buns and how many square metres of flat surface would each bun have?

Once they’re truly bonded you shouldn’t have trouble with them fighting or have to check every five minutes, but as that may be a way off it could be a cool project.

I am pretty clueless when it comes to construction work so I have no idea if this can become a good bunny cage. But it looks like an interesting project!

I considered the Expedit when I was looking into different types of shelves/closets/chests/drawers to convert into a bunny cage – in my opinion, just about any IKEA fixture will be too narrow. The rabbit would have some room to move sideways, but I do feel like some width would be required to make the rabbit enclosure at all comfortable.

Then again, my rabbits are 4kg and 3kg (and growing), so what’s too narrow for mine might work for a smaller bunny. I won’t have anything that has less than 60cm width for my two.
