Introduction- no bunny yet!

Hi Everyone,

Nice to meet everyone! My name is Jon, I’ve been a long time bunny lover but never was in the situation to own one due to a variety of reasons (mostly being a student and then a full-time job with no time to spare) but recently I’ve relocated back to the Bay Area where my parents live, this also means that my stay at home mother will be able to bunnysit for me while I’m at work so I figured it was finally time I adopt a bunny! 

As I stated, I am new to this so I joined this forum to mainly learn and research, I’ve already learned a lot and look forward to hearing any advice you pros have to offer. I plan on adopting a bunny since I really want to save a life so I’ve been visiting various shelters around my area but it seems that their bunny selection is extremely limited (I’m not dead set on a particular type but I do like lop eared bunnies). Anyone have any advice on bunny adoption? Pros/cons? I’ve already read through the FAQ section on costs and time and I’m okay with everything. 

BTW- I’m usually on forums for car/automotive stuff and there are often car meets where we bring our cars to hangout and check out each other’s cars, I’m wondering if there is something like that for bunnies where we can bring all our bunnies out and have them play with each other?

Best of luck in finding your rabbit companion!

I believe the house rabbit society headquarters are based in the Bay area. Also, Save a Bunny, a well known rescue among the house rabbit community. It may be a case of rabbits being taken out of regular shelters quickly by a lot of Rabbit Rescues.
Have you checked out petfinder.com?

As for social events, Im not sure what is around for the Bay area. Hopefully some of the members local to you can let you know. Some cities have started Hoppy Hours where people bring their rabbits for interaction. Pretty crazy seeing them all hop around!

It’s essential that your mom knows as much as you do about rabbit care and your future rabbit’s behaviors, inclinations, etc.. Make sure to keep her in the loop.

great advice and will do! we had a golden retriever for 10+ years and my mom was great taking care of her and taking her on walks everyday so I’m confident she’ll be just as caring as me.

on a side note i just put in an application for adoption for three rabbits i’m interested in and am tentatively scheduled for a site visit next weekend to meet them! excited!

Definitely keep the following in mind:

1) Rabbits are considered “silent” sufferers — they don’t verbalize pain or discomfort; they only show it in convoluted ways. While dogs whine and have very clear retractive body language, rabbits really only scream when they are experiencing outrageously severe pain or fear. Aside from that, it’s all silence and loafing (sitting hunched up, which healthy and happy rabbits do too, so again, convoluted).
2) It’s easy to step on/kick a rabbit when they’re free roam. They are sound-less when they dart and you can’t see them readily when standing because they are so out of sight on the ground, so tread lightly. They are attracted to movement around food sources (kitchen) and bag sounds (quickly associates with food).
3) Default setting for rabbits is they don’t like being handled, picked up, or pet constantly. There are many exceptions, but if your rabbit ends up being less-inclined to cuddle, do not force it. Some take literal years to open up to cuddles with their owners.
