Hello All! My name is Bonnie Sue (duh) and I am new-ish to rabbits. I say “new-ish” because my family had a rabbit when I was younger. Unfortunately, Buttons lived like so many “forgotten garden rabbits.” Although he received good care (he lived to be 10 years old!) I was sorry to think he must have been very lonely. I did not know anything about “house rabbits” and how much fun they could be. A longtime animal enthusiast, I have been guardian to horses, cats, dogs, rats, hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs, llamas, a savannah montior lizard, and numerous fish. Currently, I have two horses (Ginger & Clarence), two cats (Capone & Leon), two dogs (Peg & Molly) and one rabbit, Hazel. It was never my intention to get a rabbit right now, but she kind of just fell into my lap and never left.
I live in a very rural country area. There is a small local tavern that allows pets inside, as they do not serve food. A few years ago, I began taking Peg, my German Shorthaired Pointer, to the bar. A wonderful older man who is like a surrogate grandfather lives upstairs. His health is failing, but he still gets up every day to work hard. He especially loved my dog and renewed his quality of life after being gifted a beautiful tea cup yorkie named Ralphie from some mutual friends. I have been studying animal assisted therapies for many years (especially in relationship to my endorsement in autism spectrum disorder) and am amazed by what powerful healers they are. About a year or so ago, a local family moved away and irresponsibily let loose two sets of breeding rabbits. Old Vern has painstakingly set up the yard out back to offer them shelter from predators and has taken to catching the babies and placing them in homes. He also brings home all the veggie clippings from his restaurant job. Hazel was chosen especially for me by him, because of her sweet temperment. We believe her to be some type of Rex cross. Several other neighbors have rescued rabbits as well.
I have only had my little girl for about a month. It has been a whirlwind of activity! From the minute he put her in my hands, I felt something soften and change inside me. She is so kind and sweet. All I wanted was to learn how to give her the best life I could. She has provided me with a sense of comfort than is different than my other pets. At first, I thought I would set up her hutch in my horsebarn, but quickly realized that she would miss me terribly and vice versa. I carried her in my oversized hoodie pockets to do almost everything that first week: from grocery shopping to horse chores to cold cocktails, she was my traveling gnome. I purchased two carriers, an x-pen, a pet stroller and anything else I thought she might need. I poured over the House Rabbit Society website and ordered a ton of books. She very quickly established a corner for going potty, and although she makes some mistakes (only with poop, never with pee), I think she is doing great for a 10-12 week old bunny. I am so amazed by how she watches me and knows who I am. Or how she shows her happiness with little binkies of delight when I talk to her or give her a new treat. She especially loves bananas! She can sometimes be a bit of a diva, but overall just seems very curious and happy to be with her new family. I am very grateful to have found a whole group of people who are as enchanted by these creatures as much as I. I look foward to learning more together!
