         Hi All,

I recently became a first time bunny mom to a male holland lop.  Thelonious (named after a jazz pianist Thelonious Monk) is 6 months old and have quickly became the love of my life…. after my only child of course (now away at college).

I’ve been suffering from empty nest syndrome and really needed something to love and take care of now that my son is all grown up. I was thinking of getting a puppy as I had a cocker spaniel for over 10 years.  I wasn’t sure, but I knew I needed a pet in my life.

So I took to Youtube to check out puppy videos and as only Youtube can do.. I somehow ended up watching bunny videos!  No one told me bunnies have such great personalities.  I always found them to be precious to look at but had never considered one as a pet.  Well.. after a half of evening of countless bunny vidoes, my heart told me this is the pet for me.  I learned of this forum through one of the videos and it became my nightly ritual.  I devoured as much information as I could. Purchased a few books from Amazon and tossed and turned many nights trying to decide if I was indeed a “bunny person”. Finally, I listened to my heart, examined my finances and set out to find a bunny.  I bit the “bunny bullet” lol and am totally in love with my little twinkle nose.

He has blessed my life in such a little amount of time.  It’s a lot of work and not cheap to care for rabbits but worth it, if one has the financial means. I had to sacrafice a few things from my routine to become bunny ready and I can’t thank this forum enough. I knew what to expect and how much work was required.  The information on what it cost to care for a house bunn proved very valuable and gave me a realistic view. It helped me make a fully informed decision.  No more daily starbucks for me, but Thelonious is so much better for my health than a grande cappucino: )

Peace and blessing to you and your amimals.

        Here is Thelonious.

Okay mom. Make this the last picture for the night!

          Welcome : )

Such a nice post! Reading it, I can’t help but feel that you and rabbits are a great fit. Looking at Thelonius, I’m guessing he put any doubts you still had out of your mind forever? He’s too adorable!!

You became waaaay more prepared to bring home a rabbit then I ever was. I’m afraid mine was a spontaneous decision but one I’ll never regret.

So what does your son think of this fluffball that now demands your attention? :p

Hi Jersey Girl, Thank you for the kind reply.  It’s funny that you asked how my son feels. He actually encouraged me and is very pleased that I have something to pay attention to besides him .  I admit that I can be on the overly attentive side.  My son hasn’t actually met Thelonious yet, but sends daily text asking about him.  I’m a little concerned regarding how Thelonious will react to him since my house hasn’t had any visitors since his arrival.  The good thing is it’s not to quiet as I play lively jazz music pretty much all day and leave it on while I’m at work. I play it at a pretty good volumn and bunny boy Thelonious is not bothered at all. He’s pretty laid back so far. As a matter a fact, when I turn it up, he knows the days activities are about to start and he gets all happy and binky.  I even play soft jazz turned down at night which seems to relax my bunny boy.  Its just me and the new baby and our music so far and its been great.

My son is not concerned at all as he plans to win Thelonious over with craisons!  I have to keep an eye out when he comes for visits to make sure he is not over treating…

I tried to check out your profile but couldn’t access your bunny pictures for some reason but I bet they are as precious as can be!!

Thanks again for the kind welcome.

            Kind Regards..

Thelonious is just too lovely! I have one lop and one with standing ears, both were found outside. I didn’t know anything when I found the first one, Bam, had to check the Internet for everything and when I stumbled on this forum, what a difference it made! Here’s so many wise, knowledgeable, kind and helpful people it’s amazing.

It’s really soothing to pet a rabbit, to see them hop and climb and dig and investigate the world around them. I find myself smiling so much more often now when I’ve rabbits. I honestly had no idea how infinitely lovely pets these little mischievous monsters make =) They aren’t perhaps the easiest of pets (my dog is in many ways much lower maintenance) but their company is so so rewarding and ever interesting.

I feel I can’t really say wellcome because I’m just a wee guest here, but I like it here a lot.

                Thelonious is soooo darn cute!

I enjoyed reading your story – and I too have spent a night or two watching bunny videos on youtube!

This forum is excellent because the amount of bunny knowledge in one place is priceless.

I didn’t realize before owning a bun how funny and sweet these animals were. Now I know better

Any chance of more pics of your little cutie?

Thank you all for the warm welcomes. I really appreciate that!

Skipper’s mom, Bam, Emandme and others. Your bunny babies are all so precious and gorgeous!!! I love this site. It feels like Im part of a global family of bunny lovers.

I’ll try to post a few new pictures later today!

When I try to take pictures of him. He comes up so close to the lense it makes it nearly impossible to get a good shot of him.

I’m scheduled to get him neutered in a couple of weeks and trying to stay calm.  Although I just got him about a month ago, he is over 6 months and it’s time. I wanted him to adjust for a few weeks and to get used to me handling him before we embarked upon the surgery.

I was so nervous about picking him up at first and I had to overcome that hurdle as I know I will need to check his bottom to make sure things are healing properly. I can now pick him up with no problem. it was tough going at first but little small pieces of bananas are how we crossed we got through it. a little tiny piece from my hand and then swoop him up quickly and give him a few more very small pieces while I rubbed his ears and talked baby talk to him. He’s pretty good with it now and just relaxes and waits for his sliver of banana. So he associates a special treat with being picked up (but he much prefers to have his feet on the ground)

but it isn’t so bad. I think I was more nervous than him.

Now that i can handle him pretty good and rub him all over while he is in my arms, I think we are ready and this site has helped to mentally prepare me.

                    Thanks again all.

                      Thank you. =]

Trust me I know what you mean when you say that Thelonious tries to stick his face into the camera! My little boys, Ian and Hugo, do this all the time! It’s a miracle that I have any photos of them at all. =p My little girl, Skipper, on the other hand is a big poser. The minute she sees a camera she’ll either run away or strike a ‘model’ pose.

Don’t worry about the neuter. Thelonious will do great! I can understand the initial worry and stress (I’ve totally been there). But boys always seem to recover the quickest and do better. It also really helps when you have a vet that you really trust do the surgery. I was super worried about getting Skipper spayed since she had gut issues. But my vet was amazing and understood my concerns and helped me through the process and waited to do the surgery till she was better. So trust me, get a vet to do the surgery that you trust and feel really comfortable with doing the procedure.
