Introducing Peyton

I’m a new Bun Mum.

We (well mainly me lol) have been wanting to get a rabbit for a few months now but didn’t want to just rush into buying one without fully thinking it through and reading all the information we could. Plus my husband Mike is highly allergic to fluffy animals so I wanted to make sure that if his allergys didn’t agree with the rabbit I could keep it outside, (we were in luck, he’s fine with Peyton and spends a lot of time playing and snuggling up to bunny). The last 3 weeks I’ve been buying things we needed to house a rabbit and growing an organic vegetable patch to feed it.
I’ve been talking to a few breeders about getting one as where I live there are only a handful of rabbits up for adoption. I was told that I’d have to wait for at least 2-3 months before one would be available.
A few days ago while taking my son for a ride to the park we saw a house with a sign at the front with baby rabbits to give away.  The rabbits were 6 1/2 weeks old and supposedly  mini lops. We went in for a look and were told that they were giving the rabbits away for a friend and those that didn’t find homes would be sent to the RSPCA to be put down I know it’s a little young to be adopted but I couldn’t bare the thought of a bunny being put to sleep.
So we are now the proud parents of a white and light grey mini lop. Not sure what her colourway would be called but she’s got a grey smudge on her nose, light grey markings on her ears, feet and tail, plus it looks like there is a faint grey ticking to her white coat.  I’m not sure of the sex and the lady giving them away couldn’t tell me either.  One of her ears hasn’t lopped yet, well not fully, sometimes its down but most of the time its sticking straight up in the air
At the moment Peyton is in a large pet carrier and is using my sons old rigid kiddie pool for a playpen but I will be buying a inside rabbit house in a weeks time.

She’s very cute! Such a shame that people were going to give them away to be euthanized 🙁 People are so cruel.

I think her color is some form of himalayan (himalayan is both a breed and a color). Himis are generally white with grey, brown, or black coloring in all of the areas you mentioned. The coloring can change with the seasons, becoming darker when it’s colder and lighter when it’s warmer. The babies are also born white and develop color as they get older, so if her colored parts get darker in the next few weeks, I would bet that’s what she is.

What kind of cage are you looking to get? There are some great ideas in the gallery (link at the top of the page) for different set ups. Some of us prefer using shelving grids to make a custom cage, while others use puppy exercise pens or dog crates to make cages. Store bought cages tend to be too small and expensive, but they can be fine if you attach a pen to them to provide more space (this is my set up).

Congrats on the new baby! Its sad when people would rather put down unexpected babies than do the responsible thing.. glad you found the poor thing!

Make sure to take her to a vet, to confirm she is indeed a she for one! If the previous owners were that irresponsible to just take them to get euthanized, I’d hate to see something wrong with the poor dear due to them not giving her good care.

I don’t see any in the pics you provided, but make sure the baby has tons and tons of hay, its the #1 item in a bunny’s diet, they need an unlimited supply of the stuff.

Peytons ear has now dropped and has been down all day. I’ve completely removed the mix that came with her and have just been giving her pellets and hay, she seemed a little pee’d off today when she saw no mix but started eating the pellets this afternoon lol One thing I have noticed though is that she doesn’t seem interested in eating the hay, it’s starting to worry me a little as I’ve read that this is very important. Is there anything else I could feed her to substitute until she’s eating the hay?

I’m hoping to either get some NIC cubes (if I can find them in Adelaide, Australia) to build her pen but failing that I’ll see if I can find a large dog crate to use. I’m so happy that Mikes allergies haven’t reared up with her so she can be a house bunny.

Oh and I also noticed that all the fur on her head is looking very light grey a completely different colour to her white coat.
As soon as I get Peytons Place (pen) set up I’ll post pics

This is the feeding guidelines for baby bunnies from Rabbit.org:

• 4 to 7 weeks–mother’s milk, access to alfalfa and pellets
• 7 weeks to 7 months–unlimited pellets, unlimited hay (plus see 12 weeks below)
• 12 weeks–introduce vegetables (one at a time, quantities under 1/2 oz.)

You really should try your best to make her eat hay. I know some bunnies haven’t realised that hay is good for them, and it can be difficult to persuade them. However, you may try various types of hay (meadow hay mix, oat hay et.c.) and mix it up. She needs to be a hay eater as hay has an abrasive effect on the teeth, so in the end you may risk her suffering from overgrown incissors if she doesn’t eat it. Well, hay does so much more than that but teeth problems is a big issue to me and that is why I emphasise this.

I just noticed that her eyes aren’t red, so I change my guess of being himalyan colored. 🙂 I don’t really know now! My guess is something color point (where there is color on the nose, ears, etc) but I’m not sure what. Her color may change as she gets older. She’s very pretty though! Colorpoint bunnies are my favorite 🙂

There really is no substitute for hay.. you’ll just have to try different varieties and keep offering it to her. Its vital she gets eating it, as they need it for teeth and digestion.

Today Peyton is still not touching her hay so I’ve taken some hay out of that horrible mix she was on and mixed it in with her regular hay I bought. I’ve put it all in a container so I can see if she’s eating the hay that didn’t come out of the mix, fingers crossed.

Hi again. I didn’t realise you were in Adelaide! Myself and another member Kafrn, are also Adelaideans so we’ll be able to point you to what you can and can’t get around here. Hopefully you can share your local knowlege on supplies too.

For NIC cubes unfortunately they’re hard to get. I’ve only seen them by another name in Bunnings and they were expensive in my opinion. A puppy pen might be an option, or something you can build yourselves.

Karla mentioned the 2 hays that are pretty much best hay available here – oat and meadow. For babies though, you can try her with lucerne hay also. Pop some in the front of her litter box and see if she’ll start eating some there. Now she is off the feed mix, she may start to turn to hay to fill up, give it some time.

On her colouring, perhaps she is a frosted pearl? Kafrn has a bunny Flopsy that I think is this colouring also.

Oh, I’m not the only Radelaidien lol, glad to see you two on here.

Today Peyton has starting eating her hay, at the moment I’ve got her on lucerne but will get something else when I can find it.
I’ve bought a xpen off ebay very cheaply and will be converting that into a place for her, as soon as I do I’ll post pics in the habitat section.
