Hello and welcome to Binky Bunny! The first step in bonding rabbits is for both of them to be spayed or neutered. So, if you are serious about getting a companion for your bunny, you should go ahead and schedule his neuter. Most rescues and some shelters spay and neuter their rabbits, so if you adopt from a rescue, you will very likely get a female that is already spayed.
It’s always scary when our rabbits have to go under anesthesia, but if you have a good, rabbit savvy vet, you should have few worries.
Most rabbits do love to have the companionship of their own kind, to snuggle and groom and communicate as only a rabbit can, but there are some rabbits who do prefer to be the sole rabbit in the house. Also keep in mind that while most of the time it is pretty easy to bond rabbits, especially a neutered male and spayed female, sometimes a bond just doesn’t work and they have to be keep separate. That is rare. All of my bondings have been quick and easy, but some do take time.
