As you all know I’m getting an English Angora bunny and although I’ve still got a few weeks left to wait I thought I’d share with you all pictures of my little bunny as I get them.

Two weeks ago I got a photo sent to me and thought what an adorable little baby, so cute at just two weeks old

On Monday I got an email letting me know that my little baby is a girl and what did I want to name her so it could be put onto her papers. Spent the next 24 hours thinking of names and ended up going with “Phoenix Rising” for her registered name but she’ll be commonly called Ash unless she gets into trouble!

Then this morning I wake up to find this in my inbox

I spent yesterday cutting some fine wire mesh to fit the bottom of her big crate home and attached it with cable ties on the outside so she can’t catch herself or nibble on them, it’s not the best job in the world but it looks OK and should do the job. I’ve also been researching feeds and where I can get things like hay locally but just need to get some large storage containers to keep roaches and the like out of the hay and chaff (coursely chopped hay) and work out where exactly I can put them to stop my sticky beak kitties from getting in them.

            She’s super cute!

Good luck finding a good hay source.

One random question – what is the wire on the bottom of her cage for? Rabbits shouldn’t live on wire flooring, but it can be helpful in a litter box to keep them from digging up the litter.

After discussing with dozens of angora owners and breeders a mesh base is suggested to stop things like pee, poo and other messy stuff from getting into their wool and causing matts and/or flystrike, also because of their overly hairy feet it’s believed that they don’t feel it as much as non hairy rabbits would and there will also be several spots that have tiles or something similar so she can rest her feet.

Most of our members don’t use any kind of bedding in their cage – the only bedding is in the litter box (and many of us use screens over the litter box). With a set up like this you won’t have to worry about any mess in the fur that could cause matts and your bun will be much more comfortable. Even if the wire bottom isn’t uncomfortable for her, it makes litter training almost impossible because bunnies never learn where not to go (most will not go on a bare floor, but with a wire bottom they don’t learn where to go)

                      CUTE!! Congrats and welcome!
I am with Elrohwen on this one-you definitely don’t want to keep your bunny on a mesh floor. Many breeders do as they keep lots of animals and it is impossible to groom and clean them as well as an owner does.
As a rabbit owner though it’s unnecessary and can cause sore hocks and just pain. Most rabbits use a litter box, and then are clean outside of the box and don’t need litter/bedding outside. A smooth floor or blankets or carpet is preferred outside of the box.

Just over a week until I pick up little Ash, she was 7 weeks old yesterday and will be 8 weeks and 4 days when I pick her up (or if you go by dates and not weeks, she’ll be 2 months old). I’m excited as well as nervous!!

Good luck. I hope the homecoming goes well.

Well Ash is home and settling in pretty well. The kitties all but ignore her as she hops around on supervised explorations and she isn’t game to try the stairs from the rumpus room as yet.

Over the next few weeks I’ll be moving my computer desk and a few other things to turn the 6ft square area (that’s currently the study) into a bunny area. Not half spoilt!!
