My friend could no longer care for her rabbits, so long story short, I took them in. I don’t really know very much about bunnies.
Anyway…the oldest was about six, and I think the younger is around two.
I think maybe my friend had kept them indoors. I did also for a couple weeks or so, then moved them to a large hutch outside. I would let them run around the yard a little when I had time. At first I wasn’t so good about keeping the hutch clean, so it went about three weeks without being cleaned, but I tried to keep clean newspaper and hay in there until I was able to clean it. Doing much better with that now.
Just a little bit of back story in case any of that is I portent for the question I have. So one day I noticed the older ones testicles. At first I was freaked out because I didn’t know how they should look. I found a picture online. And realized his looked like it might’ve had a little infection or something, they had a couple bad looking spots, like infection. All I could find that sounded like what it might be was hutch burn, so I figured maybe that was where I hadn’t cleaned the hutch well. So I cleaned the hutch, and took a look at him a week later to see if it looked better….and it looked like his testicles were falling off, and I definitely knew that was not ok! It took awhile to find a vet but I finally got him to one. I thought maybe it would just require a castration surgery. Turns out his intestine was coming out through his scrotum, for some reason. I can’t remember exactly what the vet called it, but she did say it sometimes happens to intact males. Unfortunately, Yoshi was put to sleep because the survival rate was not good and he was in a lot of pain and would have been put through a lot more. :'(
My question is…have any of you ever heard about this? I have tried looking online but I’m not having any luck finding more information about this. I want to know if its something I did without realizing it so the other bunny doesn’t end up having the same thing happen. I hope to get him fixed soon, but in the meantime, I don’t want to feed him something or put him in a situation where that will happen to him. Anyone know what to look out for?
Thanks! I need to call the vet and see if they can give me more info. If no one else here knows, I will post what I find out if II get some answers from the vet.
