Hi Ladies and Gents,

 

I’m new to this site and would really appreciate any advice please.

 

My bun Issabella is being given her Mixamatosis and Viral Haemorrhagic Inoculations in one injection in March. Have any of your precious buns been given them this way. My Issabella is five soon and I’m worrying if this new double whammy style would floor her?

Hi, Helly13,
I’m guessing that you are not in the USA, because we do not require shots here. I am not familiar with what you’re concerned about. My best suggestion would be to look up (phone book or internet) veterinarians who specialize in rabbits, aka “Exotics”, in your country. Just call a few of them and ask them your question as stated above. An experienced vet with rabbits should know immediately if it’s safe. I gather you are concerned about the vet doing the shots or you wouldn’t be asking.

As Pam said, we don’t have vaccines here in the US, but there are many active members from other parts of the world! Can you post your country and someone should be along soon that will have info on this for you…

Hi and Welcome to the forum.

I don’t know where you’re from but I live in the UK where bunnies need to be vaccinated.

Don’t worry, the double vaccine is totally safe and normal!

It’s actually the newer style. Having two separate vaccinations is the old way of doing it. They needed to be given at separate times and lasted different amounts of time too, so the new vaccine is much more convenient for everyone (including your bunny!)

Here is what my vet’s website says about it:

Rabbit Vaccination
There are two fatal disease of rabbits which can vaccinate against. They are spread between rabbits by biting flies, fleas and mosquitos.
Myxomatosis:
This is a disease commonly found in wild rabbit populations, it causes swelling of the face, ears and genitals. It is usually fatal. A vaccine is available for myxomatosis, the vaccines lasts 6 months.
Viral Haemorrhagic Disease:
This disease causes a very acute illness so that affected rabbits die from severe internal bleeding.
There is a new combined yearly vaccination for both of these conditions.

My yohio got the double vaccin last year. No side effects. It’s standard in the UK now and the risk of side-effects are low. Here’s the fact-sheet:

Before you had to give two shots of myxo and one of calici every year, but this new vaccine is only given once a year. From what I’ve read on British rabbit-forums, most bunny-owners seem to have had good experiences with this vaccine.

 

At least I assume it’s the Nobivac you’re getting. What country are you in?

Great info, Tessie and Bam! This is good to know! Sounds like it’ll be easier for everyone only having to do one injection per year!
