I’m new hello

 Hello everyone Im new to this forum and wanted to ask some questions.

 

In about three weeks time I will be getting two male baby mini lop bunnies (they are about 9 weeks old) and so far I’d say I am pretty clued up about bunnies and etc and I have been doing a lot of research.

 

Im so excited!!!

However I haven’t been able to find any information on a few things which I need to find out.

 

Firstly I would like to get my bunnies vaccinated and neutered as soon as possible. Would one week after I get them be ok? Or should I wait longer for this?

 

Also would it be ok for me to take them on a train? On the weekends I usually stay at my parents house, and that would be their main home during holidays aswell. They are house bunnies so they are getting another pen and hutch in my room at home. So could I take my bunnies with me? The train journey is relatively easy and only takes 2 hours. Would this be too stressful for them though? I have a cat carrier which is really top quality for them, it is hard plastic and has two food bowls in there, so I was wondering if if I put treats in there and hay and a soft blanket and some famillar toys, would this help keep them calm? Also I would feed them water through their bottle.

I read somewhere that putting some drops of ‘rescue remedy’ in their carrier would help calm them down. Is this true? Because I thought this was only for humans….

 

Also I wondered if it is worth getting pet insurance (UK). At the moment I don’t think I will be getting it but do any of you have opinions on this?

By the way I haven’t named them yet, I want to call my harlequin Nemo?? The other is a greyey lilacy colour so Im not sure what to call him either.

Welcome and congrats on your soon-to-be bunnies.

As far as I know there isn’t an age limit for vaccinations (correct me if I’m wrong guys) but boys usually need to be about 3 months before getting neutered (girls are 6 months). They can’t fix them until their little boy parts actually drop which happens when they hit puberty so you will just have to wait on that.

As for traveling, it depends on the bunny. Some bunnies do really well traveling while others get really stressed. Personally I think that a 4 hour round trip every weekend would probably be extremely stressful for them (always surrounded by new smells, loud noises, unfamiliar everything) and make it hard for them to really get settled into either place since they are always traveling. It’s really not something I would be comfortable doing with my little girl but like I said, how they react and handle it depends on the bunny.

I’m not familiar with rescue remedy but if it is intended for humans than definitely err on the side of caution. Bunnies are rather delicate animals so if it isn’t intended for use with bunnies it’s best not to use it period unless advised by your vet or something.

Rescue Remedy is actually okay and I’ve used it before and it appears they now make it for pets. I couldn’t say for certain if I felt it actually helped but it won’t hurt. Tried it on myself as well and couldn’t tell you if it worked for me either…

I would talk to the vet about the vaccs and neutering. Some vets won’t neuter until the rabbit is a certain age, or a certain weight, so it can vary from vet to vet. We don’t do vaccs for rabbits in the US, so I’m not sure if there is an age limit for that.

For travel, I think it would be ok. Some bunnies get overly nervous about travel and new places, but many adjust ok. Most will not eat or drink while in the carrier in a car, not sure if they would perceive a train differently though, since it’s less bumpy with fewer turns. For travel, I put in a blanket and some paper towels or newspaper under the blanket, in case someone pees. For longer trips I add some hay, in case they are interested in it, but for shorter trip I leave it out because it can make a mess. I don’t provide water because it makes a mess and they won’t drink it anyway. My buns go hours between drinking at home, so a couple hours without water isn’t a big deal. I’ve tried providing wet veggies, in case they would be interested, but they never eat them.

Thanks everyone for your replies, I’m still not sure about the travel every weekend but I think I will try and do it most weekends if I can. I’ll just take it easy. My bunnies don’t seem overly nervous from what I have seen of them, but we’ll have to see about that.
I’ve just found that they do do a pets version of the rescue remedy, I found it online, I might buy it but its quite pricey so I’m not sure yet haha!!!
