So I received an email from a program I had participated in during my undergrad. It was a survey wanting me to describe my experience with the program. I replied back asking if other people would be able to read my comments. They responded saying I was correct, this is a directed survey. Okay, now I’m feeling really dumb here. What exactly does that mean? Are people going to be reading my comments and know that they came from me?

Hmmm… a goggle search for “What is a directed survey?” did not even bring up anything… and google knows everything!

I’m thinking it’s one of those scale surveys (very satisfied, very disatisfied, etc…), but I’m not entirely sure.

Nope, I saw the questions. They are just open blanks for you to fill in whatever you want.

I tried to google as well but found nothing – if it is blank spaces to fill in, yes they will be able to see your comments … but no idea if they’ll know it’s from you or not.

I agree with the others that Google didn’t turn up anything. Strange.

I would just email them back and say you still weren’t clear if anyone outside of the company collecting the survey would be able to read your responses.

I tried googling it first thing too. Nothing. Weird. Oh well, the professor I worked with during the program is no longer there so I guess it doesn’t matter what I say.

I’d say errr on the side of caution on this one, and maybe don’t participate if you don’t want your name tied to it. I had particpated in a signature thing to support the weather network staying on basic cable (though I don’t have basic, but satellite and it doesn’t affect me-I feel strongly that the weather network is important and should be bundled) so I participated and wrote comments, rather personal about how a family friend had passed away while driving through a storm that we had not driven through after consulting the weather network-thought it was heartfelt and so on…WELL the stupid website had posted me HOME address etc along with my comments. It was a mistake and they corrected it but had I not been googling myself _(something everyone should do often) I wouldn’t have known all my contact info and home address was available on the web-yuck. So I’m much more careful now. AFter that experience I would so ask for clarification or not participate Hope this horror story helps!!

Well I don’t think they would post my personal info on the WWW. I was just worried about a certain professor reading the comments. But I guess it doesn’t matter since said professor is no longer there. I think it is important to be honest because my experience was not what I would call a good one.
