If you have a rabbit, can you have any other pet too?

Because of bordetella? I’m interested in getting a bunny, but I have rats, guinea pigs and a hamster. The rabbit wouldn’t be in the same room, but in the same house. Does anyone here have a rabbit and something else too?

I have dogs with my rabbits, and I know there are several people with cats, rats, guinea pigs, hamsters, ferrets, the list goes on and on! I’m sure you’ll get others to chime in with their experiences.

I can’t remember the bacteria that is involved, but I know G.P.s are not supposed to be housed with rabbits because they can give the bunny something. But that means not the same cage.

I have a rabbit and a hamster, this is the second time I have had this combination of animals and nothing bad has ever happened to either of them. The last rabbit/hamster pair were actually very good friends and the bunny would hop about with the hamster rolling around in his ball, they always played very well together. Freddie and Bramble are not as good friends but they are ok with each other and aren’t aggressive or anything towards each other.

We have two bunnies and two hamsters who are all healthy and happy I would be wary of rabbits and guinea pigs though because the bunnies can make your piggies sick with that bacteria and it doesn’t have to be transmitted through direct contact, could be passed through cross-contamination on your clothes & hands. I’m sure if you take proper precautions then your guys will be fine and you’ll have one fluff-filled home!

How does this work for you? Are your bunnies free-range? Do you ever leave them unsupervised together for any length of time? I’d love a dog but would never bring one into the house is there was risk of chewing or terrifying my buns to death!

Right now I have 3 single buns and 2 small dogs.  My buns are 1 1/2 yrs and 6 months old.  My dogs are both around 5 yrs old, and neither of them have a high prey drive.  Also, since they were adults when the first bun got here and extremely obedient to verbal commands, I didn’t have to worry about them harassing the rabbit.

To be honest… the rabbits are way more interested in the dogs than the dogs are in them.  I do not let the younger buns out of their pens unless we are able to supervise them.  Not because I am afraid of their interaction with the dogs, but because I am afraid for my household items.

Clyde isn’t interested in the dogs at all.  He knows they live here, he will walk, hop, run, binky all around and past them, but he really doesn’t have an opinion of them.

Bumpy, the older rabbit, is only restricted to his pen when the other rabbits are out for their floor time.  He is free-roam now pretty much all other times, including when we leave the house for hours at a time and while we are sleeping.  With that being said…

I have (in the past) housed rabbits well with jumbo coturnix quail. The quail would clean up the feed waste from the rabbits as well as consuming their own feed. Dogs and cats can be compatible with rabbits. Do not ever keep rabbits with chickens because they are competitive species. Guinea pigs can be ok with a placid, disease free rabbit. Rats and rabbits fight since rats are a predator to kits and carry disease which the rabnit instinctively defends its area from. Rabbits seem to get on well with hedgehogs (European) but they are messy and usually illegal. 

Chinchillas are another fibrevore you could consider?

I’ve got a Black Lab and a little dwarf bun living together. They are both 9 years old. 

They work great together. Although my dog really couldn’t care any less about my bun and the rabbit is all about the dog. It is nice for me because they both have a companion to be with during the day while I’m gone.

I do let my rabbit roam free around my dog, but never unsupervised. The dog is extremely well behaved, but he’s so much bigger than my rabbit and sometimes will kick him without realizing it. So I keep a very close eye on them when they are together so my rabbit doesn’t get hurt.

My cousins had a cat and a rabbit and it went ok.
Meaning the little boy bunny liked the girl cat and the girl cat disliked him as much as she disliked everything else.
It’s sad but little Tim-tam did live to be the ripe old age of 16, with one eye and a love of people’s feet.

These two got along great together. Trix, the black lop was, very timid around people and bonded with MeowMonster quite well. They were lovers and sometimes I wondered if I should be letting them spend so much time together. But it was consensual and my vet said there are no bunny/cat STDs I have to worry about transmitting. Although you can imagine how extremely awkward and embarrassed I felt bringing that one up to my vet.

I have a guinea pig (not housed with my bunnies) two dogs and a horse (also not housed with the bunnies )
I wash my hands and change if I’ve been at the barn and my dogs aren’t unsupervised with my rabbits, and the guinea pig doesn’t socialize with them-but totally doable to have other pets
I think hygiene is especially important because some illnesses are zoonotic -i.e cross species
