I feed my 1 yr olds a 1/3 c of food at nite and 1/4 in day. pellets Laith seems to have gotten a little plump he has his neuter in oct or nov. they are about 4 lbs. I dont’ ahve a scale in my home but they are lionheads and their weight is about 3 – 5 lbs and they are small guys.

I will order some of binky buns hay I think they will enjoy that and find some timothy pellets our pet store carries it.

if I feed them less pellets I may see laith picking at hay more often he was picking at it this morning when I put some new refresher in there would sure help his teeth out

I think they will LOVE the Binky hays. I think if you reduce the pellets Laith will eat more hay. Also don’t forget to give them 2 cups of greens as we have mentioned before! That’s an extremely important part of the diet.

            Hi,

Hay is the most important part of a bunnies diet, it should make up 75% of it, rest should be greens/ veggies/ pellets/ little fruit once in a while. You should cut down on the pellets. For a bunny that is 1-4lbs they should get no more than 1/8th of a cup of pellets and if 5lbs then 1/4th of a cup. Too much pellets is a bad thing, it leads to dental and health problems including them being overweight.

Feeding limited pellets is important because you want them to be hungry for their hay and greens/veggies that are really important. Pellets should not be main source of diet. In addition to limited pellets and unlimited hay they should get a min of 1 cup of 3 different greens/ veggies a day start them off slowly. Some that are enjoyed by bunnies are dill, cilantro, romaine lettuce, mint, endive, basil, parsely, green/red bell peppers, carrot and carrot tops, kale. You wanna offer 3 different daily for variety and always feeding the same greens can cause an imbalance in their system.

Another thing to consider is if your bunnies are getting to the point where they might be or soon will be overweight good to slowly switch over to a timothy pellet which has less protein, fat, and calcium that older rabbits over the age of 7 months do not benfefit from and dont
need. Some companies that make good quality timothy pellets are Oxbow, Kaytee, Sweet Meadow farms, martin mills (canada)

Take a look at this website contains some good information on diet and other things http://www.hrschicago.org/dietcarefr.html

            Hope that helps

I’d agree with bunnylover0504, that pellets should be a smaller part of their diet. If they are older than 7 months, then I would slowly transition them from their current food to the timothy pellets. Normal for a 5 pound bunny is 1/4 cup of pellets a day – and it sounds like your bunnies might weigh than that. By decreasing the pellets, it will also encourage them to eat the hay.

I had runny poo problem with Pumpkin. So I switched to Timothy based pellets and decreased the amount of pellets. After about a month, Pumpkin was perfectly healthy with ‘good’ poo. It’s important to control the amount of pellets you give your buns.

I also have lioneheads and I give them 1/4cup a day. 1/8 cup for each of them.
