Help!
I have a party invite that’s themed 80’s icon and am having trouble. Basically because I’ve left things too late. Party is Saturday…
So when you think “80’s Icon” what do you think?
I already know there will be Madonnas and Cyndis so I don’t want to do that. Knock out those 2 & im finding it hard to think of other female icons.
Right now I’m considering:
-Boy George, because i have a black wig and think would be easy to throw outfit together. Would it be weird to be a female dressing as a male who dressed feminine?
-A Ghostbuster. Convenient because I could use outfit for Halloween also.
-Ninja Turtle. Will probably feel foolishly overdressed. Plus I’ve already been a TMNT before.
Also thought beastie boys or Devo might be easy outfit but idk…
I’m not overly keen on any of those. Mmmm…
Anyone been to a party with this theme? Who or what did you go as?
Annie Lennox
Siouxsie (and the Banshees)
Kylie Minouge – late 80’s
The lady from Flashdance
Characters from Dallas or Dynasty
A Valley Girl – for sure!
Olivia Newton John? (Let’s Get Physical)
Debbie Harry from Blondie
Also Molly Ringwald
Princess Leia (Star Wars)

Personally I like American Apparel’s take on Ponies. It’s like a mix of bad aerobic wear and stuff you found in the clearance section at a Hobby Lobby lol!
Olivia Newton John is a good one! What about Tiffany or Debbie Gibson? or Whitney Houston?
pmsl @ the buzzfeed link!
Thanks for that. Too funny!
I had thought Kylie & Olivia! Mainly because they’re Aussie and Kylie was one if my 1st cassette tapes when I was 12. :p
I’m don’t know if I’m confident enough to do olivias aerobic look but it would be easy to put together.
Oh wow. Flashback moment. I had a jazzercize cassette also. Lolol.
I used to lead my younger sisters in sessions.
Were Tiffany and Debbie Gibson late 80’s? I remember them a bit. I was in primary school thru the 80’s and in a very small town. So wasnt up with most pop culture of the time. Most stuff I picked up off my older siblings or friends siblings.
My best friend and I aged 8 thought “Bruce Bringspring” was wonderful. That’s what we thought his name was.
Sorry, going off on tangents!
The Siouxsie Sioux look is great! Reminds me of Edward scissorhands. I had thought of that for costume but was bummed to learn film was 1990.
When I saw 80’s icon, the first thing that popped into my head was Alex P. Keaton from Family Ties. Maybe it’s because Michael J. Fox has a new show in the States? Maybe it’s because that was my favorite show growing up because Jennifer (the youngest sister) and I had the same pair of pajamas? Not sure. But if you’d be OK dressing as a guy, it would be super easy to pull off – button down shirt, tie, sweater with a fake APK proudly embroidered, and a briefcase.
I may need to see if Family Ties is on Netflix…
I had thought about Skippy from family ties!
And I very much remember Jennifer’s look. : )
I graduated in 1981 so I kind of consider this my era.
Do you remember Men at Work? I have no idea though how you would make this work since you are not a man…I used to love the song “Down Under” – they had quite a few I liked.
There was also the famous Robert Palmer video with those very stylized women. Of course the 80’s was the beginning of MTV.
Yeah, the Olivia Newton John “Let’s Get Physical” Video was a bit much LOL.

I do! They’re very iconic Aussie as is that song. Brian Mannix (the lead singer) had a blond spiky mullet hair-do. There are wigs around like that.
Edit: haha! I got that wrong. He was with uncanny x-men. I’d definitely fail an 80’s pop quiz .
LOL My first thought was Nancy Reagan! But since you’re Aussie, it’s even harder to pull off.
I love the Princess Lea Cinnamon Bun ears hairdo. That and a long white sheet dress and you’re done.
Shoulder Pads out about 2 feet off your shoulders, in a white suit with a pencil skirt, and BIG hair. Hoop earrings. wedgie platform shoes.
Lois Lane in the Superman movies. Mork & Mindy.
One white sparkle glove and a hat and you’re Michael Jackson. Practice your moonwalk.
Well if you’re going to do 80s fitness, then you have to do Richard Simmons! LOL
I always thought of Star Wars as being more 70’s…yeah, I know…nitpicking. lol….
Boy George…oh yeah…he was stylin’! ![]()
How about Alannah Currie from Thompson Twins if you’d like an edgy look? ![]()

Margaret Thatcher… UK PM from 1979 to 1990
Sigournet Weaver Ghost Busters… Indiana Jones, MacGyver, Paul Keating, ET, Smurfs, Gremlins, Strawberry Shortcake (the toy)
Dallas, Dynasty and seinfeld all came out in the 80s
Ooh lots of ideas here. Thank you! (I’m on quick break to read bb and reply here.)
