Hi! About maybe a week ago I started seeing a black lion head bunny running around outside. I thought maybe someone was out with him watching him while he played. but I soon noticed that someone just totally dumped this rabbit. I set traps and caught him, he’s very friendly and loves to eat and lovesssss to be pet. But he had ticks and we got them off of him but I’m scared their might be more. He has flaky skin On his ears and in the back of his head. He also has brown dots on his skin.. are these baby ticks? I have medication for rabbits that’s for fleas, ticks and mites, but I’m scared if I put it on him that the ticks will hop off and come to me or my other bunnies, if he has anymore on him. I’m a minor, so it’s hard for me to make money and right now I only have $40, and I don’t think that’s enough to take him to the vet I live in North Carolina and have no idea what the cost is, nor to I know how to describe what’s going on becuase it’s just weird as heck!

very kind of you to take in this poor bunny. Can your parents help you with vet costs? the flakiness seems like fleas. try calling a vet and see if they are willing to help you out. you never know. Some shelters also take on buns and help you with some procedures and they can check if the bun is chipped etc.

What kind of product do you have ? DO NOT USE FRONTLINE it will kill the bunny. The only truly safe product is Revolution or Advocate for Cats. a 2.5 kg bunny would require the 0.25 ml ampule.
The product should kill the tics rather than just repelling them, this occurs within 12 hours so if you keep the bunny isolated for that time period you should be fine.

The little brown dots probably are baby tics, you need to treat your bunny asap as they will definitely spread through the house if left untreated.

Can you advise the name of the product you have ?

It’s also a good idea to keep the bunny isolated until it gets figured out. If those are baby ticks and fleas you wouldn’t want them to travel onto your other rabbits

The first and most important thing to do is learn to recognize the early signs of GI problems and treat your rabbit accordingly.

It is worth it to mention that allowing your vet to take x-rays, even if she is already fairly sure it is a hair/food mass, is an important procedure prior to prescribing medication. If a real “obstruction” is present, the use of GI “motility” drugs could cause the mass to move into a smaller area, causing an intestinal eruption. GI Surgery should only be considered as a last resort.
