I was driving home from my dog’s agility class up in the hills when my hubbie spotted an obviously domestic rabbit at the side of the road.  I got out and we were able to catch it (it went under a bush when I tried to pick it up, but only stayed just barely out of reach the whole time).  Put up signs, and no one claimed it.  It is a neighborhood with only a few inlets, so if someone was looking, they would have seen the sign.  Its been two weeks, and I don’t know what to do with it.  It is small (2-3 lbs.) and nice, but my rabbit ended up at the vet twice last time we tried to introduce a second bunny to the household, and I dont’ know the health status of this one.  I don’t really have the money right now to vet it since it isn’t mine.

I have had a couple inquiries to adopt it from craigslist, people who want me to give them info on the rabbit but want to remain annonymous.  The second I ask them for any info, they dissapear.  I’ve only been asking what pets they already have, where they plan to house the rabbit, and if they have kids.  I asked for $20 and said I would include hay, food, and litter supplies to offset that.

I can’t foster a rabbit for a long time with my housing situation, and the rabbits welcome is wearing thin.  I wish I haden’t seen it, because it is just adding to my already high level of stress.  I guess I figured I could take it to a rescue and they would find it a home, but they told me they are full.  Should I just dump it off at the shelter?  I guess that is what shelters are for, and it ISN’t mine – I found it on the street.  It makes my feel a little guilty, though.  A big part of the problem is that I am split between two households right now with my job.  I fostered a dog and that was easy – just stick him in the car.  But a rabbit needs the cage and all the stuff with it, plus car rides are more stressful.  It is a huge hassle and I wish it was just gone.  Probably doesn’t help much that when I stay with my family on weekends, they don’t want it there and I’ve gotten crap from them over it, too.

I feel that if I am not picky at all, it would go home with someone who doesn’t know the first thing about treating a rabbit well.  Especially with Easter coming up.  (On a side note, we got Coffeebean right before Easter.  We joked that he was our Easter bunny, although it really had absolutely nothing to do with getting him).

Should I just take it into the shelter?  I’ve spent 2 weeks searching for the owners, I’m pretty sure at this point that no one is looking for it  (Especially given the area I found it in – agricultural zoning with lots and lots of animals – maybe was an escaped 4H project…)

Sounds like you’ve got a lot on your plate. What your doing is a GREaT thing though, dont beat yourself up or let others guilt you on it.

I would definitely just drop it off at the shelter. Tell them the story, you have one and you saw this one on the side of the road and can’t keep it. It’ll at least et checked over by a vet and altered that way.

          Whereabouts are you? State wise?

If the rabbit was lost, his/her best chance of being reunited with his/her family is through a shelter. Try not to place this negativity and stress on the rabbit though.

I’m in SF Bay Area. I guess I’m just a little hesitant to take it to a shelter, because the only other time I took something in I thought they would find it a home, and they just euthanized it basically at intake. Plus, they were VERY rude to me. All I did was volunteer to drop off the stray at the shelter since it was on my way home. (stray kitten that was found at my work, I guess they thought since it had an eye infection, it wasn’t worth the money or effort to treat it).

With this rabbit, I wasn’t able to get to the shelter the day I found it and then I was out of the area for work. I guess I’ll drop it off tomorrow, though.

It really sucks that people are not more responsible about animal ownership and that we have so many homeless animals.

Euthanasia is one of the really tragic side effects of someone else’s irresponsibility. Shelters are always in such a delicate spot. They have very limited funds and have to make many really difficult choices. Hopefully this rabbit will find a home. If he does end up being euthanized, that relatively peaceful end will likely be better than what would have happened to him if you hadn’t saved him that day. Thank you for helping him!

Wow, this thread makes me incredibly sad. I feel awful for this poor little bun. He’s so innocent and now has to suffer because someone else’s negligence.

I wonder if, since you’re in the SF area, perhaps you could contact Save A Bunny (ads are all over bb.com I think) and maybe they could direct to a safe place to take the bunny where it might have the chance of a home instead of being euthanized.

Thank you for rescuing him. I hope you can find some help through SAB.

Save A Bunny has a very good reputation. Hopefully they can help !
