I found some fleas on my bunny

Hi!

I wanted to know if there’s any way to get rid of the fleas on my bunny safely. My bunny, Felix, he’s fine, but he has this small bald, red spot on his back where the fleas are. It doesn’t seem to bother him at all, but is there anything that I can use to treat the area? Will it be back to normal if I manage to get rid of the fleas?

I have called the vet, but he’s not available for now and I’m scared because I’ve heard fleas could be dangerous for rabbits. I also have a few cats who had a few fleas, but I’ve applied their treatment and they’re ok now.

You can get Revolution from any vet. Some vets will even measure out the correct dose for you with your bunnies weight.

Revolution is the safest flea treatment. There are some brands that are poisonous to buns so make sure it’s Revolution.

You also need to make sure that you keep vacuuming any rooms your rabbit is in. Fleas only stay on the animal at times, at other times they are in the carpet or in the upholstery, etc. and they can lay eggs elsewhere. If you don’t get rid of the fleas that may be elsewhere, they will get back on the rabbit at a later date.

You can use diatomaceous eath on carpets, baseboards etc. It’s non toxic but the rabbit should not be so near it that he can breathe the powder in or it. It dries the fleas and their eggs out so they die.

Advantage (imidaclopride) is bunny safe and kills fleas.

I also want to issue a warning about Fipronil (Frontline, Sentry and other names). It’s deadly toxic to rabbits, so don’t ever use that near a rabbit. It’s safe for cats and dogs and easily obtainable OTC, but it’s very dangerous to rabbits. I’m just saying it becaue we’ve had cases with tragic outcomes here.
