Hi, I have a big problem that’s kind of scaring me like crazy right now. So my bunny had discharge coming from his eyes and the vet (which was crazy expensive to get an appointment from) told me to keep lightly wiping it with warm water and it was going good until recently when I was away for a while and come back to see his fir hanging from his eye with goop on it (still half attached) You can see his skin and some red where the fir should be and I’m freaking out not knowing what to do. It’s seems too attached to cut off and I don’t know if that’s a good thing to do anyways. He’s running around and doesn’t seem like he’s in any pain.

I have pictures but I really don’t get how to attach a photo on here so I probably did this wrong.

The fur came loose because the area is constantly wet. This isn’t normal. He could have an infection, a blocked tear duct, or tooth root problems.

What if I can’t get a vet appointment soon? Is there anything I should do? I guess the vet was wrong when she told me it would go away soon.

You can cut off the loose fur, but be very careful not to nick his skin. You should contact the vet again. Is it both eyes? Are the eyes red and irritated? The vet could prescribe antibiotic eye drops for starters, most commonly fucithalmic, to see if that will help. They should be able to do that without a new visit.

You can put a tiny it of vaseline on the cheeks under the eyes to protect the skin from the wetness. Try to gently clean the area first with saline (human saline eyewash for example) or water that has been boiled and cooled, then gently pat dry-ish with a clean compress or suchlike.

If antibiotic eye drops don’t help within a week, this needs to be investigated further.

Rabbits can get a piece of hay stuck under the eyelid, causing redness, inflammation and lots of wetness, but it’s unlikely that would happen with both eyes at the same time.

I’m going in to see the vet an hour. She’s saying this can be a huge emergency and I can’t help but think this could have been avoided if I got eye drops when I came to her the first time.

Update! Turns out Spike has upper respiratory infection and he’s been put on medication. I’m happy there’s something I can actually do about it now.

I’m sorry he has an URI, but I’m glad he’s getting treatment. Fingers crossed this will resolve quickly wth the appropriate meds!

Glad to hear you were able to get a diagnosis. The meds should clear it up.
