I have two bunnies. Their names are ChubChub jr. and Mrs. Moustache. Their about 9-10 months old and their sisters. Yesterday, Mrs. Moustache was acting strange after I left them out of their cage to run around while I cleaned their cage. While ChubChub was running around like usual, I looked over to Mrs. Moustache and saw that she was shivering (more like shaking like a spaz attack) I immediately got scared. Her “episodes” would only last a few secs (about 5 seconds) I’ve never seen her do this. I began to look it up to see if others would be having this problem. Within that time frame, Mrs. Moustache had 3 more of her episodes. I called a vet near by and luckily their “exotic pet” vet was there so I immediately took the Moustache duo to the vet. When I tried to explain how her episodes were like, on cue Mrs. Moustache had her episode.
It’s strange on what she looks like. It’s like a cross between her humping but she doesn’t hump something. The vet checked her and the only thing they could find was she had a slight fever. They poked her and she didn’t witness pain, they checked her blood glucose and it was fine. They asked if she had seizures, head tilt, or heart attack and I said no. They’ve been healthy since the day I got them. This is the first problem I’ve had with them.
When they experience her episode, they think she could be coming into heat. (Which is possible maybe?) ChubChub showed these signs of being in heat wayyyyyy early on but Mrs. Moustache has yet to show hers. The vet checked her, along with the assistant with us and even another assistant came to look at her. Between all of them, they don’t know what’s wrong. They gave her some medicine along with antibiotics (in a shot) and they said hopefully it will bring her fever down and maybe work her “kinks” out on her horomones. We decided we will wait to see how the medicine will work. Last night, she didn’t show much improvement except that she was having a reaction to the shot area (area right behind her ears )as it was a little bit hot. I got a wet towel and dabbed down that area to help cool her down. It worked but then a few hours later it would be back. She’s having difficulties getting into the litter box now
I put down a towel and set it by the litter box to help Mrs. Moustache climb in so it wouldn’t strain her much.
I was actually scared to go to bed but went ahead. The next morning, I checked my bunnies and saw Mrs. Moustache halfway out of the litter box. I helped her out. I didn’t see her have her episode but now, it looks like she can’t even walk at all. Yesterday, it was more like a wobble but now, it looks like it’s worse
I don’t think she’s ate or drank anything since yesterday since their litterbox isn’t littered in poop like always.
I literally have no clue what’s going on here. My cousin (these are her bunnies accident babies) will be here Friday to come see them since she is worried herself. Out of her 5 bunnie grandkids, only 1 passed away due to worms. The family that had the bunny, didn’t have the bunny for too long either ![]()
Your bunny needs to be seen by a rabbit savvy vet immediately. I would consider this an emergency.
JR is right. Please find a new vet who is rabbit savvy and take her there right away, It doesn’t sound like she’s going to make it much longer.
Don’t wait around for your cousin to come by, she needs treatment right now.
It’s not her coming into heat, rabbits don’t go into heat, they are induced ovulators. Don’t go back to that vet, it seems like they have no idea what they’re doing. Sending healing vibes for your little girl.
Oh dear, yes this is an emergency. You need to get your bun to a vet that actually knows rabbits. If a vet tries to tell you that your bunny is “in heat”, then they have no clue what they are talking about and I would run the other way (fast!).
What you’re describing sounds like its something neurological. Just from what you described, e. cuniculi could be a possibility. But there are also a lot of other things it could be. I just wanted to show you how serious the situation is, all the more reason to find a good rabbit savvy vet.
I have called 2 vets and I am seeing one today after school. I was thinking that she had some sort of infection that is effecting her nervous system.
*Major Update*
Well I just came back from the vet and I have some good news! The vet told me what may be wrong with her. She has some sort of infection (either a parasite or bacterial) that’s effecting her brain that is sending signals to her muscles on her front paws. She can feel pain but just can’t control them. The vet gave her some shots and gave me some medicine for me to feed to her. He also gave me some powder to help her diet that will help her. The vet said they will call me on Monday to see if she has some improvements which I am hoping! I promise to update you guys! <3
Did the vet do any tests to determine what it is? I don’t know what the vet gave you, but antibiotics won’t help if it isn’t bacterial.
I’m also wondering how the vet determined what to give… What other info did he give you?
So sorry to read about Mrs. Moustache. Have to agree with the other comments above. Is this a rabbit savvy vet? What tests did he conduct? Major positive vibes to (((Mrs. Moustache))) and hope this situation turns around for you both.
Sorry for the late reply but Mrs. Moustache passed away this morning
It just happened after I had given her her medicine. We prayed that her soul went up to heaven and that she was not in pain anymore.
So sorry for your loss.
Im so very sorry.

The Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together….
