I don’t get it…completely normal except he was grinding his teeth earlier?

He’s pooped, eaten, and drank water all in the last five minutes. He’s alert and energetic and just his usual sweet self. But he was grinding his teeth earlier – the loud, pained kind – and I have no clue why. Also he made a noise and then thumped just before he started.

He hasn’t been grinding his teeth in the last few minutes but I took him to the vet last week for not eating so I’m worried. (He didn’t eat for about 7 hours and I’d heard lots of stories on the internet about rabbits not eating and then just dying, plus the internet was advising bring him to the vet IMMEDIATELY after not eating for 4-6 hours so I brought him in and found out it’s just a thing they do sometimes when they moult and not to worry but I still had to pay 150 bucks)

Also I’ve never heard him do this kind of grinding before.

Anyway I feel like an arse$!&$ when I say this but unless it’s an emergency I’m not bringing him to the vet…better safe than sorry, sure, but a line has to be drawn somewhere and when you’re a poor student this line is a bit nearer to disaster than I’d like it to be.

Also: might be coincidental: but I’ve noticed he’s been chewing on the cage bars recently. It’s one of his ways to let me know he wants out, but could it also be a sign of tooth trouble? Do rabbits still eat with tooth trouble? How can I check if something’s wrong in his mouth?

Alright guys he hasn’t done it since and he is just being so freakishly and adorably normal, so I’m just going to assume it had something to do with a pressure system (I seem to remember they get freaked out by that, hence the thumping?) or maybe like I dunno maybe he was remembering something embarassing he did in front of a lady rabbit several months ago.

My rabbits will go a few hours without eating. They do sleep after all. Could he have gas? Have you tried rubbing his tummy?

if it was tooth trouble he would probably not be eating and certainly not gnawing on the bars.

Sounds like it was an isolated event. I’m glad he’s behaving normally now.

The sudden tooth grinding and thumping sounds like something startled or scared him. Porky sometimes at night gets all stiff perks his ears and thumps. We suspect it’s the fox, who we see paw-prints from and my son once found hiding under our porch, passing too close to Porky’s window and making him nervous. He has also thumped and hidden under my lawn chair while outside getting fresh air and exercise b/c an airplane flew over low.

Most of us only check in here once a day, twice if we’re bored. I sometimes go several days or even weeks without checking in if I’m on vacation or things are hectic. Getting responses in less than 20 minutes would just be lucky timing.
