Hello everyone i recently welcomed a bunny into my home, he is 4 month old.

I named him zues. So zues was ok until i saw him scratching his ears and and the. I grabbed him as soon as possible to the vet , which we don’t have great ones here but it’s what we have considereinf where i’m fron. So anyways tha vet described a sulfer cream. Later on around 2 weeks later I noticed a swollen finger and whenever I researched turns out to be a sign of having mites so i went to another vet and he gave him a shot of dectomax “i’ll attach the photo” so i said everything will be ok again but briefly after his second shot I flipped him over and i saw this “I’ll attach the photos” . It turns out it’s still getting bad. I don’t know if it should get worst befor it gets better or should i give him another shot of another medicine but it might be dangerous and the sulfer thing i was putting it on him for two weeks and he keeps licking and I don’t know if it’s toxic or not .. or this how the process of healing works ? Please someone help me and exuse my English, it is not my first language please help me he is my only thing that I love in this world
        Thank you all in advance

The active substance in Dectomax is is called doramectin http://www.medirabbit.com/Safe_medication/Anti_parasitics/safe_antiparasitic.htm

It’s used to treat scabies mites in rabbits. It shouldn’t take two weeks to take effect though, although scabies may need repeat treatment. Do you know the name of the sulphur ointment? He could perhaps be hypersensitive to it.

From what I can find, sulphur ointment is often used against scabies in cattle and humans. But there are always some individuals tgat are especially sensitive to certain substances.

I read up a little bit on mange. According to several sources, the intense itching can persist for 2-3 weeks after the mites have died. The rabbit can self-multilate due to the itching (for example gnaw at its paws) so sores arise. Bacteria can then infect the sores. The bun constantly gnawing/itching also prevents sores from healing. Bunny-safe antihistamines can be used to relieve itching.

You should do repeat treatment with either the Dectomax or with Ivermectin. A study from Turkey suggests that ivermectin works faster, but it also says that after 28 days, all rabbits were free of mange regardless of whether they’d been treated with doramectin or ivermectin.

You also need to clean the rabbit’s living area and Medirabbit suggests treating it with an agaricide like Virbac. The rabbit mustn’t be in the room when you apply the Virbac, because it’s toxic to buns. Fipronil, another antiparasitic, is deadly toxic to buns and must never be used.
