It hits close to home not only because I am (obviously) a rabbit lover but also because I use to work at a Petland when I was in high school, and also bought 5 rabbits from my local Petland store. Apparently PETA is stepping in and asking Petland store to stop selling rabbits because they are unable to care for them and I absolutely agree!! I purchased 5 rabbits there also in the past 3 years. 2 have already past away and one was an adult given to petland because a child didn’t want their pet anymore and his long angora fur was “too much to take care of” I couldn’t leave him there! He was petrified!
I did however buy 4 baby bunnies at my local location and sadly 2 have past away due to breeding/genetic defects. The first bunny, Dusty, that past was the runt and had a jaw defect that didn’t allow his teeth to grind together properly. We didn’t notice until his teeth were way overgrown and he had problems eating. He was so tiny that our vet was afraid she’d break his jaw so we made the hard decision to put him to sleep. Our second loss was Malcolm. He developed a chronic jaw abscess issue. We took him to the vet the first time and paid for a $800 surgery that we couldn’t afford only to have another abscess develop less than 6 months later and by the time it became physically noticeable it rupture and he past away less than 24 hrs of noticing the abscess. It wasn’t as prominent as the first time as it went down under his jaw not on his cheek like before.
Anyway, we learned our lesson and will NEVER purchase a rabbit again and will only rescue from now on. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to help PETA to get Petland to stop selling rabbits??? I’m so willing to help!!! Any advice is appreciated!!
