How to re-home a rabbit

I know this is not a good topic. I’m not happy making it either.

Our neighbor gave us a two year old male rabbit for Christmas, without talking to us at all about it. And if she had we would have told her no, because two is enough of a handful, not to mention a third coming in.

He is 2 years old broken Havana, not neutered, and quite sweet, although a bit skittish. Fully litterbox trained as well.

I have talked it over with the boyfriend and we both agreed we just can’t keep him. Speckles and Chom have been raising absolute H E double hockey sticks all night long, and there have been attempts at fighting through the cage the people gave us with Zorro. Now the question is… How do I go about finding a good home for him?

I contacted our local adoption agency in Ohio, but they aren’t open for a few more hours. I made a post on the local FB page, and a few Craigslist ads. What else can I possibly do? I want him to find a good, loving home, but ours is just not a fit for him.

You could try contacting your vet and asking him or her about it. Sometimes they will know of a family who is looking to adopt a rabbit and will give it a good home, or they might let you put up a notice in their office. Besides any local rescue, you may have to go outside your area to find a rescue that is able to take a rabbit. Here is a state by state list. These lists aren’t always current, though.

I don’t recommend posting on Craig’s List, as you may get people responding who want the rabbit for reasons other than as a companion animal.

I’ve contacted local vets, and all the local shelters. Nobody has any room for him. I took down the craigslist ad. It seems for the time being he is staying until we can find him a home.

We don’t have a car so getting to an out of state shelter is pretty much impossible.

Unfortunately, finding a good home for a bunny takes time. If you don’t know the person taking him, then you have to be thorough enough in your questioning to make sure he’s going somewhere he will be safe and loved.

Would you be able to house him while the rabbit rescue posts ads for him, etc? If they don’t have room for him, they might be willing to use their resources to find him a new home if you agree to take care of him for the time being.

Update~ I have found him a home! A customer of mine has wanted a rabbit really badly, and offered to take him in! He would be the only pet in the home, and it is wonderful because he is a little lover!

I spent last night with him curled in my lap for hours of his own choice, and when my other two are separated, he follows me and my boyfriend whenever we move from room to room. Go in the bathroom and his little paws will show under the door, cause he wants to come in! I think they will make a nice pair, and I trust that she will take good care of him! He is certainly a single rabbit kinda guy, who loves humans!

That’s very good news, and you are lucky to have found someone to adopt him so quickly. I’m sure that you can help this lady with rabbit care tips if she isn’t already knowledgeable. The Bunny Info link is very helpful here, if you want to let her know about that. I often refer people to it.

Honestly, I would have returned the rabbit to the neighbor. It’s not your responsibility to rehome that bunny. I would have said, “While we appreciate the thought, we are not looking for a third rabbit.” You cannot just give someone a pet without knowing their situation/asking. Just bc you have rabbits already, doesn’t mean that just ANY rabbit will fit in with your buns. This is so frustrating to me!

Beka we spoke with her about it, but she has like 6 dog, so we couldn’t leave him with her. It was frustrating and my boyfriend kind of berated her for it, and explained it a bit, and she apologized profusely.

The girl who took her I trust, and see often, and I will constantly be updated about Zorro. I’ve recommended her to a bunch of help books and websites, and she texts me often asking questions. She already made a vet appointment for him with the vet we go to, since she knows we are content with them.
