So, for a week now, I’ve been taking care of my new bunny, Nancy. She’s a sweetheart and I adore her, but I feel that I can make her happier and more comfortable. She hasn’t completely settled down nor built much trust with me (of course that takes time) but I want to make sure she’s at her happiest. At the moment, I feel as though she isn’t very happy, and more depressed. I have a pen, which isn’t very big as my home does not have much room, and due to recent weather conditions, I haven’t been able to bring her outside. It’s been raining a lot so my poor bunn can’t go play outside. I’ve given her some toys, (two hard plastic balls, some wood blocks, paper, two stuffed animals for company ((without any beads or chokables)) and a cardboard box. But I still feel I’m not bringing out her inner happy bunny. Perhaps there’s not enough hay? I give her enough hay for the day when I go out, maybe a little less, so maybe more hay? I’ve been feeding her a 1/2 cup of pellets a day, a 1/4 in the morning, a 1/4 in the evening. I make sure her water is filled. I’m trying my best to make her happy. I’ve named everything I’ve been doing so if I’ve missed anything, please tell me. I’ll continue to give my girl cuddles and love. Thanks in advance.

It sounds like she is very well taken care of. You have only had her a week so she is probably still settling in to her new home Some bunnies take quite some time to come out of their shell and be truly comfortable but I’m sure she will become more outgoing and show her true happy self in time. I don’t see why she wouldn’t be happy given everything that you are doing for her

How much does she weigh roughly? 1/2 cup of pellets is quite a decent amount and if it were me I would probably reduce the amount to 1/4 cup per day, any more than that is quite unnecessary for smallish-medium rabbits and tends to reduce their hay consumption or promote weight gain.

I agree with Azerane, it sounds like you’re doing everything right. Since rabbits are prey animals, they tend to be very cautious (a must in nature where too much boldness will make you end up as somebody’s dinner). It can be quite a while before they really warm up to their human. Hidey-boxes helps, tunnels help too and everything else you’ve mentioned – toys, good food, company. I too think 1/2 cup of pellets sounds like a too generous amount – if you cut back she might eat more hay.

Thank you for the advice! She’s actually a bit bigger than a medium sized rabbit, maybe slightly smaller than my cat. But once again, thank you so much for the help! I’ll do my best to make her a very happy girl.

Thank you very much!! She’s a bit bigger than a medium sized rabbit, maybe a little smaller than my cat. I’ll try to reduce the amount of pellets and instead replace that with hay. I hope she’ll be a happy bunny once she gets used to the place!

Cool Just to give you an idea, my boy weighs 3kg and I only feed him 2 tablespoons of pellets daily.
