How to go about getting Cecotropes

  Recently my dog destroyed a wild cottontail nest, and the mother was killed. I was able to save 2 of the babies and I’m going to take care of them, because the nearest rehabber is over 3 hours away and thats just to far. Now I’ve been taking care of house rabbits for awhile now and I have saved injured wild ones and released them before, but I have never had the experience of taking care of a rabbit this young. Now I’ve gone through dozens of sites and read up on them, and the one thing I need to do is take care of their intestinal bacteria. I am giving them acidophilus to help, but I read the best thing by far is to give them cecotropes. I have a house rabbit that will donate, which is great because he has never been sick once, but he eats all of his cecotropes. I just don’t know how to go about inducing him to make some for me to collect. Does anyone have any experience with this?

  Do you have a wildlife rescue near you? Might be a good idea to let them take care of them, or get advice from them.   How old do you estimate the babies to be? Are their eyes open?
  
  If a rehabber is too far away, perhaps they can advise you over the phone on how to proceed with the babies?

  I’ll see if I can contact a rehabber to see if they have an idea or at least meet halfway. Those were definitely help Jerseygirl, thanks. I read up on gut flora and I am doing everything it says, but hopefully normal rabbit droppings will then be enough to introduce the intestinal bacteria they need. I’m already supplementing colostrum and acidophilus to help them. I’ll call a rehabber, but in the mean time I will try to use other rabbit pellets and pick up some ciprofloxacin antibiotic for them.
