› FORUM › DIET & CARE › How much pellets?
hello.
My bun is 5 months and I’m currently giving him a 1/4 cup of pellets a day. He does look a bit skinnier than most holland lops, so I bought him the Sherwood Forest pellets which have a bit more fat, but are healthy at the same time. Since he is not a year yet, should a be feeding him a 1/4 cup in the morning and another at night? I’ve heard people say that when bunnies are babies, they should have two servings of pellets a day. I guess he’s still a baby. Last time I tried giving him two servings a day, he didn’t want as much hay and overproduced cecotropes. So with that said, should I give two servings a day since he’s technically still a bay, or should I give 1 serving a day?
By five months I already started the transition from alfalfa based pellets to the timothy ones, and shortened the portions. Rain is six months old and gets two table spoons of pellets a day, and is still an ideal weight.( 2.6 because she’s a dwarf) But, that is because I also give her a treat and veggies every day ( along with hay ofcourse!) If you’re worried about him, you can take him for a quick weight check at the vets office. I thought Rain was chubbier than most dwarfs, but turns out she’s a false dwarf so she’s slightly bigger than nethies. Anyways, she is a normal weight. I think a fourth cup pellets a day is perfectly fine until he reaches about a year. For now he’s good.

Thanks! Rain looks adorable <3
I think that for now, I’ll just stick with giving him a 1/4 cup until he turns a year old. When he does turn a year old, how much pellets should I feed him? Maybe like 1/8 cup a day? I also give Toby veggies daily and unlimited hay of course. With treats, I feed them 3 times a week. Some buns can have treats and tasty stuff daily, but mine can’t. If I start to give him treats on top of his pellets daily, he’ll stop eating hay.
And I have been wanting to take him to the vet for a checkup, so I will have to do that. Hopefully in April I can![]()
Yes, an eighth cup a day is perfect for his weight and age at a year old. The vet can also tell you the exact amount if you wanted.
My vet said an 1/8 cup at 6 months because they’re technically an adult then.
Once he turns 6 months, I guess I’ll give an 1/8 cup. I’ll just have to schedule a vet visit and see what they say.
Honestly, it’ll probably be more like trial and error. I think by the end of the day my boys get somewhere between 1/8-1/4 cup of pellets, depending on whether or not I use pellets as a treat that day or how high I fill the 1/4cup measure. They’re healthy weights for Hollands. As he’s not leaving behind a ton of cecals you’ll be fine.

thanks AandB
Sometimes I do decide to give pellets as treats like when he’s playing with the TeachnTreat toy, I use pellets to hide in the holes. I usually give him a little less than a 1/4 cup when I give the pellets as treats. As for as cecals, Toby’s been overproducing more since he’s not eating enough hay. I’m feeding him a hay brand he likes now, so I hope I don’t find any cecals in his cage today.
Toby is also a Holland Lop. When AandB were around 6 months, do you maybe happen to remember their weight? Toby is offered a very good diet, but since he came from a breeder and has always been well taken care of since birth, he’s picky. Since he’s picky, he doesn’t like eating certain things, so in my opinion, he looks smaller than most Holland Lops. Maybe he’s a dwarf Holland Lop. He’s very small in size. And his weight could maybe be 2lbs. Hopefully not less than that.
Anyhow, I’m taking him to the HRS with me when I go volunteer, so I can ask one of the representatives there if they think he looks smaller than most Hollands.
My boys are false dwarves, so they’re both on the chunkier side

Bombur weighs 4.4 pounds and Asriel weighs 4.7 pounds. At 6 months they were both right around 4 pounds. I think Bombur was 3.9 and Asriel was 4.1. My goodness, I don’t think I’ve ever seen my boys at 2 pounds! I think they were 2 pounds the week I brought them home xD Their first vet visit at 11 weeks, both were just a tad over 3 pounds. A good weight for a Holland is usually 2-4 pounds. An old member, Boston’s Mama, her boy was only a little more than 2.5 pounds fully grown.

Aww Asriel and Bomber are just so cute! I just love Holland Lops and their little floppy ears
Chubby bunnies are sure adorable though! <3
Hopefully Toby grows because I think he’s on the smaller side. Maybe some Holland Lops are smaller than others. I’m going to take him to the vet soon so they can tell me if his weight is healthy or not.
In the picture you have, which one is Asriel and which one is Bombur? They can easily pas as twins! Except one is white and one is peach/tan. I think all Hollands look a like. Toby is a blue tort Holland Lop. When I first got him, he was gray/tan on his back and on his belly he was all blue. But now as he’s gotten older, he’s all tan and gray. I miss the blue haha! It was so cute and unique
I really wanted a blue tort because the coloring is so vibrant and gorgeous. But I guess that didn’t apply to Toby xD I was also hoping my boys would stay little nugget sized like Toby, but they ended up bigger. Its funny though because I say they’re such big boys, but then I look at a flemmie or a french lop and I’m like nope, you little men are still tiny xD
Thank you
and those floppy ears and faces made me fall for them. Bombur is on top and Asriel is on the bottom. Asriel is much like Toby with the color change. He’s a broken black tort, and when we first got him he was very white with just a smattering of chestnut spots. Now the little man is more chestnut and it gets darker all the time. Like half is back is chestnut. Bombur has stayed the same color, but he gained some smutzy little black tiger stripes on his rump.

Hahah
I love how you said “little nugget sized like Toby” Honestly, Toby can pass as a nugget because he’s pretty much the size of one and the color of one

When I was searching for Holland Lops, I actually wanted a broken tan/chesnut tort like Asriel! Then I got toby who used to be a blue tort but then turned tan
Well, at least there’s some tan in him haha. Ps: I really wish that this website had the laughing emoji! I want to use it so many times, but instead I have to use this one lol
It’s funny cause I thought Asriel was the one on the top and Bombur was the one on the bottom. Bombur just looks more like an Asriel idk why
Ughh this emoji (
) has got me nuts! I use it sooo much cause it’s the closest to the laughing emoji on apple phones
I know!!! Every time I do it on a post I’m like please don’t think I’m teasing. I just think whatever you’re saying or whatever I’m saying is funny. Or if I was slightly harsh and want to lighten the mood in a reply ![]()
