How long after neuter until hormonal behaviours go away

Moonpaw was neutered yesterday.  He started showing hormonal behaviours just a couple days before, namely spraying and mounting the cats.  I haven’t seen him spray the cats since his neuter (I know it is too soon to actually expect any changes) but he is mounting the cats CONSTANTLY.  Pretty much any time they are in reach.  He’s small and they are big (standing on his hind legs he is tall enough to reach their butts with his nose) so he is mostly just nosing them a bunch and humping the air unless he can catch them by surprise when they are sleeping.  Anyway, it’s annoying the cats but they are just avoiding him, I just want to know how long we can expect it to take for him to get past this?  Also, should I be worried this behaviour could tear his stitches or anything?

I’d definitely keep an eye on his stitches with the mounting behavior as well as infection. It was hard to tell with my boys when the hormonal behavior went away. Mainly because they weren’t humpy. Bombur was humpy with Az before we learned to separate, but when we gave them stuffies they ignored them. They’re also not bonded so we still get the oh so fun territorial poops. I think most boys are done after a month or two, but they can go through a post neuter craze before it gets better.

When Bunny got neutered, his vet told me to restrict activity for the next ten days. I kept him separated from Lilly to reduce any sexual urges, moved his cage into a different room, and set up an enclosure around it for playtime. Over the next few days I monitored his activity and expanded the play area accordingly until he didn’t need the enclosure anymore. I checked his incision everyday to make sure it wasn’t infected and did cage maintenance daily to ensure he wouldn’t lay in any pee or poop. I was told bunnies are pretty good at restricting their activity based off of how they’re feeling – they won’t bite off any more than they can chew (no pun intended).  With that being said, after the ten days there was no more spraying, territorial poops were extremely reduced, and after being reintroduced to Lilly the mounting was also reduced. I heard it has a lot to do with age also – older bunnies hormones die down faster than younger ones do. Speedy recovery to Moonpaw!

Thanks for the advice! I might have to lock him in a pen to get him to tone things down. I kept him in a dog carrier all that first day and over night and he seemed pretty drowsy, then the next morning he resumed normal activity and is jumping up on stuff he probably shouldn’t. He learned to jump up on the couches and the coffee table pretty much the same time these new behaviours struck and I think unless I keep him in a space where he can’t jump onto anything he’ll keep doing it. He seems to be recovering really well, but he’s being a rambunctious punk and I don’t want him to hurt himself in the process.
