› FORUM › DIET & CARE › How do you stop hay from getting everywhere??
My bunnies have their cage and a lot of the time I give them the full run of the living room and kitchen, the hay gets behind the hay feeder and all over the cage and then makes it’s way all over the house somehow, it’s like a big clean up everyday so i’m wondering if anyone has any solutions?
Our bunnies are free roam 24/7 and hay gets absolutely everywhere. Even the bedroom which is the only room that’s off limits. Only solution would be to have a hoover on hand at all times but I’m not prepared to do that!
Oh boy. It depends on the bunny. Avalon and Morgana are very tidy. But Guin and Lancelot are not. Guin buries into her hay box, and jumps out of the hay like a birthday cake surprise, and she drags hay everywhere. Lancelot has weak limbs, so he drags hay behind him by accident. Most of the time, hay is drug out of the litterbox by accident with any bunny I suppose. I can’t think of a solution, except to use shredded bedding like carefresh (I think that’s what it’s called), and keep hay in a separate hay feeder. I don’t worry about it though – I just pick up hay everyday…
Nope, just daily sweeping
A more confined hay rack would probably help, I know it would help in my situation, but that’s about all you can do. Rabbits are stinkers for getting hay everywhere ![]()
so it looks like I’m going to be stuck with a hay filled house for a long time then haha 😀

You’ll also get bunny fur everywhere
My faux leather jacket is covered on the inside with white bunny fur, I don’t know why, she doesn’t roll around in it ![]()
I’m not sure the hay rack’s arrangement or placement, but I tied a plastic mesh on the back of Wick’s hay feeders (the side he does not have access to since it’s against the wall), so hay cannot fall through the back. You can just place a piece of cardboard there. Once it’s fallen, it’s up to your rabbit to decide whether or not to make a mess, haha.

Sarahthegemini is ight about bunny fur… I dont’ even notice the hay – compared to the fur. EVERYWHERE! Especially the spots where they like to hang out.
Twice-a-day sweeping/vacuuming every day. ![]()
Try making a little box with a small opening big enough for a rabbit to go through. Put the hay in a container and then put the box over the top. I don’t know if this will work it’s just a suggestion. Even if it doesn’t, at least the buns have a box to hide in.
I’ve just accepted that Bunnies = Messy House.
I sweep, dust bust and vacuum but there is always hay everywhere.
I don’t think there’s much you can do. I give scooter at least an hour or two of play time a day, and he’s always dragging hay and with him. I vacuum once or twice a week to keep it in check and I think that’s really about it
Jake’s least messy hay holder is a box inside a box weighed down with rocks on the bottom bunk of an American Girl Doll bunk bed
I also keep a bath mat on the side that he hops in the most often. I only have to vacuum every 3-4 days and he’s free roam! I highly recommend trying it but of course every bun is different ![]()
I decided to make this as i thought the hay might be more contained (if my image works) going to try box within an box next as my idea didn’t work haha
They also like to binky in their litter trays
A couple of hours later haha…
Jacoir is very pleased with himself![]()
It’s not a solution but it makes things easier – I “invested” (hah!) in a Dyson cord free long nose hand held vacuum and it. HAS. CHANGED. my life.
It is on charge in the kitchen (not an ugly piece of decoration!) and i use it atleast 4 times a day, getting the hay and fluff and dust before it gets me !! LOL
I wondered if I should have set up the charging station out of sight, but in fact GOOD DECISION, in arm’s reach easily and I make use of it sooo much.
Before I would have to go down into the basement, get the big vacuum cleaner, wrestle with the huge snake up the stairs trying not to kill myself, lug it upstairs, unwind cord, plug in, hoover for 30 secs and do all the same in reverse. Safe to say I did this only once a week and needed a solution.
The Dyson literally has changed my life – and definitely worth the extra dolly lolly you pay for it – I nearly cried when I pressed the enter button on the computer ordering it…
I have converted 2 family members and 2 friends to buying one and I don’t even get commission !!
One cheaper practical solution is to add a ‘skirting board’ all around the base of the cage except for the entrance so atleast 95% of it stays within the confines of the xpen space. Humans passing by and bunnies binkying make drafts and the hay most probably makes its way out of the entire cage boundaries like that too…
Sophie – rofl when I saw your picture to keep the hay confined !!! yup, that really worked ! LOL
I have a handheld Dyson and agree it’s great! Skirting boards is a good idea thanks 🙂
