In humans, hernias are caused by muscle strain and weakness. So lifting heavy objects or a very bad episode of diarrhea can sometimes cause a hernia. A hernia is when something comes out of place because there’s a hole or tear somewhere. So if you strain the lining of your intestine, there will be a hernia because some of the intestine will begin falling out of that tear like a bulge.
I found a few cases of rabbit hernias online, and they all seem associated with an outside source. One case says a rabbit mother can accidentally cause a hernia to develop in her kits if she cuts the umbilical cord too short and it leaves a small hole in the kit that heals over but creates a hernia (?). Unsure how valid that is.
It seems like as long as the area can be identified, it just needs to be stitched close and that amends the hernia.
