How big would a Netherlands/Dwarf Lop cross be?

So you may have seen my thread yesterday about Mr Roger’s new toys. Well, we saw a bunny called Jarvis and we really wanted him but also really shouldn’t try to fit another cage in.

For the future, I’ve been contemplating when rabbits stop growing. Jarvis is 16-20 weeks and has massive ears that are half way between lop and pointy. My wife, used to my lionhead’s ears was convinced he’d grow into his ears and become large.

I called up today to satiate my curiousity about his breed and eventual size. Apparently he’s a cross between a Netherlands and a dwarf lop. The guy added on that he “think he’ll grow quite large”.

Maybe I misheard and he said a Netherlands dwarf and a lop but it seems to be he shouldn’t grow too much bigger (he’s currently slightly smaller than Roger).

How much do rabbits typically grow between 4 months and a year?

We’ve often looked at the single rabbits and thought “nope, too young” so it would be good to know.

Depends on what you classify as large. I have some New Zealand whites and the are big girls but I wouldn’t consider them a large rabbit. My others are andora cross and they are what I consider to be on the small side if average. When all else fails look to the feet but I would not expect a nethie cross to exceed 4-5 lbs.

Well, Mr Roger weighs 1.3kg or 3.8lbs and my wife would prefer that they were roughly the same size. Might measure up Roger’s feet and see how they compare with other rabbits for the future.

Apparently in Britain a dwarf lop is the same thing as a Holland lop in the USA.

I have no idea but I would guess the same as Roberta. My Netherland Dwarf is 1.5 pounds but I think a Holland Lop is about 4 pounds – keep in mind though that if your rabbit is a mix who knows how large he will be, but I don’t suspect too large.

One of the frustrating things is that they phrase the “in need of a special home” similarly to the special needs buns.

Roger didn’t have that on him when we got him. So we’ve always assumed that the buns weren’t possible for us.

I bet lots of other people feel the same about them too.

At the moment Jarvis is the only rescue animal which makes me think that the rescues have been withdrawn from the store and now Jarvis is actually a left over from the last litter surrendered to the charity but kept there.

It’s a shame as neither of us drive so its once of the two places we could get to easily. (The other one is also based in Pets at Home but takes over an hour to get to on buses.)

Would have been nice to keep an eye out for a girl bun which realistically is probably the best pairing for Roger.

You can never ever decipher the true meaning when people “market” animals in my opinion. Of course all the animals are in need of “special homes” LOL. But yes, special needs is really a catch all phrase too and it is always best for anyone to be very specific and honest about any animals “special needs”.

Yeah, it just frustrates me because when we got Roger we were told we could think about it for a few days because hardly anyone looks at the adoption animals.

I wish they were upfront about all special needs – if it’s something minor then people might snapped them up.

I suppose it’s bad business for pets at home if the no minimum donation adoption animals with vouchers for free neutering and jabs actually look marketable.

We’ve been in so many times and seen the same animals stuck there.

Oh, and I meant to say that they don’t put “in need of a special home” on all the animals.

I’d also be surprised if he gets bigger than about 4 pounds, those aren’t large breeds…

Pairings of any size can work, it’s more about personality than breed or size.
