I’m thinking about getting a bunny but not sure were to put it can it go in a basement? The only issue is there has been a flood in the basement. Is it ok to keep it down there?

It depends on the environment. Is it properly ventilated? Is it prone to drastic temperature changes? Is it noisy? Dusty? What goes on in the basement and what is being stored there?

Regardless of all these questions…the fact that it was flooded before means that it’s a really bad idea to put a bunny there. Are you able to bring it into the house?

If you don’t have somewhere safe to house the bunny, it’s not a good idea. What’s the point of getting a bunny if it’s just going to live in the basement? Have it somewhere where you can easily interact with it all day/evening. Rabbits are social animals and need a lot of attention. It’s not fair to leave it in a flooded basement where it will get no interaction.

              – We have our bunnies in the basement – BUT it is a fully finished Basement and its a raised bungalow style so it has decent sized windows for natural light. As our rec-room / family room and game room are down there we spend most of our time down there already – so we decided that was the best place for the bunnies as they would see us the most and have the most interaction. And its not a “Dark dank basement” lol its just as nice as the rest of the house.

Now if we were never in the basement and it wasn’t a nice finished area in the house and it could possibly flood than no – we wouldn’t have them down there and neither should you. They need to have room to run around as well. So it’s not like you can just put them in a cage up on a table.

No, that would not be a safe place for rabbits, for many reasons.

It would not be a safe environment.

Rabbits are extremely intricate animals and they require a lot of patience and devotion. They can be very rewarding pets, but they require a significant amount of knowledge and effort. You will get out of a rabbit what you put into them, and if you plan to leave him in a cage in the basement, neither of you will be satisfied. You really should only get a rabbit if they are something that you are truly passionate about. Many owners get rabbits without realizing these things, and then they get rid of the rabbit shortly after because they don’t have the patience or time to interact with them appropriately.
