I opened the back door yesterday and found a wild bunny lying in the grass about a foot away from the step. He was in the shade there, but you could tell he was still hot. He was laying on his side with his head upright. He was breathing really hard/panting. I felt so bad for him because it has been 100+ degrees outside for the past week. I wish I could have gotten a picture, he was so cute! He got up a little while after than and was nibbling on my new bushes. My husband told me to put some food out for him, but all we have is bird seed and I didn’t think that that was good for bunnies (although I have seen wild ones eating it before).

Maybe just put out some water… water would be harder to find in heat than food.

Or you could leave out some wet lettuce leaves if you see him around again.

Yes, put out some water for him. He may not drink it but it would be nice to try.

I’ve left out water for the wild bunny that stays in my yard and he seems to appreciate it

i dont think we’ve had a day under 100 since we moved here… the wild buns love our backyard though, i moved one of the landscaping water tubes so that it drains into an 8″ pie pan when the timer goes on, so they can get water anytime (and dont end up at the bottom of the pool again). I let the grass grow to nearly a foot before finally cutting it. in the morning and evening all I’d see were pairs of ears sticking out from the top of it.

though, this morning i saw something i DONT want coming into our back yard.

                    A piggy?

I might try putting some water out for him. I didn’t see him outside today though. There are a couple of buns living under the shed.

I was expecting a coyote in the second vid. But yeah, a havalina isn’t the most welcome either. They can be nasty buggers.
After all the sightings I had of bunnies…well bunny prints at least…this last winter, you’d think there would be wild hares all over the place this summer. Haven’t seen a one. I fear their burrows are all flooded due to how much rain we’ve had here. Our buns could use a little more sun, not less.
Doesn’t help that someone who lives behind me is feeding foxes too. >.< I see them running from driveways when I walk my Yorkie at night, and we definitely want to avoid them…so I just pick her up real quick and head home.
I love the first photo of just the ears. ^_^ How cool is that? Thanks for sharing those, Mike.

LBJ, I had to giggle at your post title…I thought I was going to see a cottontail stretched out in a cheesecake pose. lolz….

LOL, no no. Nothing like that. But I do wish I could have gotten a picture. Poor little bunster.

I looked out the window yesterday and I saw a bunny finally. It wasn’t the same bunny though. This one was a little baby one. It was so freaking adorable, I practically squealed with delight! I ran to get the camera. The little bunny was near the patio, so I went to take a picture. Then a squirrel chased him. =( No picture of unbelievably cute bunny. I got some squirrel pictures if anyone wants to see those though.

Awww! I love squirrels. I have a Mom and 2 babies that live in my yard. I love to watch them eat, with their little hands.

I love squirrels too. They are very cute and I love feeding them. I wanted a picture of that baby bunny though! lol I watched for him all evening yesterday, didn’t see him. I guess I’ll have to keep watching.

I got him! I got him!

He was outside when we got home and I was able to grab the camera quick enough! Silly bunny was eating the bird seed. My husband put some lettuce out for him, but he scared him away when he went out there. I haven’t seen him come back yet, but there is a larger bunny out there now (maybe the mommy rabbit?). Hopefully it will come eat the lettuce, it is sitting further out in the yard right now.

Yay! How cute! You got some really good pics of him! And the squirrel, too. I love that rabbit bird feeder/bath they’re standing next to. It especially looks cute next to the little bun. Some baby and young cottontails hang out in our yard, too, but usually I am not able to grab the camera in time. I’m also fussy lining up my shot, so I often fail to get the best pic. Grrr.

I just saw a wild bunny flop out in our yard too! I need to find something to put a little water in. My dad makes sure the BIRDS have water but God forbid the poor bunnies do. He just kind of scoffed at me when I asked about putting some water out for the bunnies. He’s not a mean person, but he usually tells me no to all my ideas for the wild critters. lol

Thanks! The birdfeeder came from my grandma a long time ago. She never could keep things straight. We had chinchillas at the time and for some reason she thought rabbits. So she would get me rabbit things. It is a cute birdfeeder though. The squirrels like to tip it over.

I was watching the mama bun a little while ago. She was out in the yard and the baby bun was near the birdfeeder. There was a squirrel inching its way toward the birdfeeder. The mama bun was giving him a death stare from out in the yard. Oddly enough though, it was the baby bun that fought back. The squirrel got too close to him and he reared up at the squirrel. The squirrel ran and the baby bun ran after him a little way. Then the baby bun thumped! It was too cute!
