              Thanks guys

Farrier is about every 6-8 weeks depending on how fast their hooves are growing, and then of course whenever a shoe falls off or something. At my stable the vet usually visits about twice a year, we split the shots up.

I just have to say that I don’t know how farriers do it. My college polo coach was also a farrier and it always amazed me that he could see that many horses and still stand up and walk around at the end of the day. I’d be a wreck! It’s such a physical job.

Beautiful equines! Strauss reminds me of a horse I leased for a year in high school who was an appendix. Pretty pony too, I love bays.

Elrohwen – the farrier that did the horses at my last barn just retired at the age of 41. His back just couldn’t take it anymore. I wince when I watch my farrier. He will do the whole barn, almost 30 horses in one day. My back gets sore just from scooping cat litter!

                    Thanks LPT!

I agree with you guys, our farrier was at the barn until 8 p.m. yesterday. Another girl’s mom at my stable actually had the nerve to ask him to wait around until after her daughter’s lesson so he could work on their pony because there’s a show this weekend (I wish I could go but I’ll be in Japan ) and he did. This girl isn’t usually in my lesson but she was yesterday doing a make up and she took up most of the time, so she could have had the farrier work on her mare first and then gone to the lesson. I really wish she had because that was my last Monday lesson until after my trip and I didn’t really even get to jump, it really bugs me when people join lessons for a make up and aren’t courteous to the normal lessoners. Sorry had to vent

You’re lucky you get to take lessons. I would love lessons, it’s been so long, but the coaches at my barn are too expensive. Just the board is expensive enough. Horses need to be cheaper.

Agreed, LPT. I will be in a position to afford lessons again next year, though I’m not sure if I want to spend $200 a month on it when I can use that money for the house. It’s tough!

At my barn if you board, share or lease you get as many lesson you want a week free, I wonder if there are stables near you guys who do that? I pay for all my horse stuff but I don’t have the responsibility of a house, ect.

Strauss is a very handsome guy-love the candid eating picture too

I have to comment-That arena (the one in the top pictures) is amazing-I’ve never seen one like that-it’s so bright! Whats the material? Is it noisy in the rain?

Free lessons? Wow! There are no stables here that do that! Some barns will give you a discount if you use your own horse.

LPT: I think some of it might be built in with the boarding costs, but still! Otherwise it’s $35 a lesson which really adds up Even with my lessons they sometimes put me on one of their horses, the lesson horses all go to shows and they have their lessoners use them. Not sure if that’s normal or not haha.

                                KK: Thanks

The arena is made out of metal and some sort of cloth (cloth might not be the best word for it) stretched over it. It’s completely water proof. Lessons during rain it’s hard to hear the trainer sometimes though For the footing they use some sort of mix of torpedo sand and rubber to give memory and be easier on the horses.

Free lessons would be amazing! Here they are a minimum of $55 for a half hour private and many places charge more.

It’s also hard to find places with nice lesson horses. Many only keep the school horses around to teach little kids and they’re not really up to the level of my riding. The people at my level tend to get their own horse or drop out. Some places have nice lesson horses, but charge $65 per lesson and are at least 30min away from me. I did find a nice place near my old apartment – only $50 a lesson, and they would often go long (if he didn’t have someone after me I’d ride for 45min at least for the same rate). He also had beautiful horses that he personally owned and had students show. It was really a polo barn and he rented half the barn and use of the arenas, so it was a small operation. I wish he was closer to where I live now since I haven’t found a place that nice or cheap.

Huh I didn’t realize finding a nice stable was so hard! I’m pretty new to the horse world obviously

My barn has 5 school ponies, 6 school horses, and 3 of their “personals” (the stable is owned by a couple, which is their home, and they both teach) that they have students use for lessons and show sometimes. About half of them (including some of the ponies) are for advanced riders. But this is always changing since the owner is always buying and selling horses, I got mine through him, Strauss was originally going to be a show horse for him but I tried him in a lesson and fell in love. Currently all but 2 of the school horses are being share boarded (which at my stable means you get to ride them in your lesson and on the weekend but they are used for other lessons during the week), but the ones who aren’t students are allowed to use on the weekend for free practice rides.

Did you compete? How high did you jump? Sorry about all the questions, I just am always interested in hearing from people who have had way more experience with this than me.

I never competed – my family didn’t have the money. Since I was on school horses I never jumped very high either. The horse I rode for 5 years was an ex-pro show jumper, but he hurt his hip and became a school horse. He could absolutely jump much higher, but with so many lessons a week they didn’t want to over-do it for any of the horses. I think the highest I’ve jumped is probably 3′, and that was as the places I’ve ridden since college. Now that I’m old and a chicken that seems really high! I kind of lost my ability to see the right distance so I tend to mess up the approach and make it harder than it needs to be.

I’m going to start popping Win over some cross rails this summer. She loves trotting poles and cavalettis. We’ve both got a lot of work to do to get in shape.
