I recently purchased an 8 week old mini lop bunny (I named him Peanut) and the breeder I purchased him from gave me a small zip-lock bag of the food she uses. My other two rabbits are fed two tablespoons of oxbow adult rabbit essentials a day (along with veggies, hay and grass) so I purchased the young rabbit pellets from oxbow to mix in with Peanut’s food but have found that he hasn’t been eating the oxbow food, just the pellets he was raised on along with veggies in the morning, Lucerne hay, oaten hay and fresh grass from my backyard. I contacted the breeder to find out which pellets she buys and have found out that she uses a mix of barastoc rabbit pellets and mitavite economix, the second are horse pellets and I’ve never heard of feeding rabbits horse pellets so I was curious to know if it’s safe to feed him the horse pellets since he seems to really like them or should I wait until I run out of them and see if he starts to take a liking to the oxbow pellets?

Not sure – I’d compare the ingredients and the percentages, but I prefer to stick to bunny food. Oxbow is a good choice.

The main thing I can see with those horse pellets is they are not very high fibre. About half the amount of the rabbit pellets. Can you take the horse feed out of the mix and just give him the rabbit pellets? Then you can start slowly mixing those with Oxbow pellets. He might take to eating more of the oxbow if the horse pellets are gone.
If you are wanting to get more of the rabbit pellet he is used to, ring some different feed stores. That usually comes in bulk bags but some stores make up smaller, unlabelled bags.
