Today, I went to a local community college to get information for a program I will be going into. I asked my boyfriend if we could stop by a local small pet store.. and he said sure.

I was shocked. There were rabbits, 4 caged up in a row, one cage on top of another, right OUTSIDE of the pet store. All cages had a padlock, and the rabbits varied in ages. Small mini rexes not even old enough to be away from their mommies … all the rabbits in wire bottom ages, rusty cages. Only a water bottle, pellets, and a freaking carrot in each cage … the baby mini rexes did not look old enough to even eat a carrot!!!!!!! There was NO HAY!

there was a rabbit on the top, I could not tell what type it was, and .. I saw it had a huge dewlap.. and it wanted to clean its face .. but .. I SAW ITS NAILS and freaked out

I could not take it, and I LEFT. And I called the city animal control. I left a message and I hope they get back to me tomororw. If not, I am going to keep calling until they do something!!!!!

I started crying in the car. I am so angry and it disgusts me

Bleh, I hate how they treat animals in some pet stores – call the HSUS and any rabbit rescues in the area too.

I’m glad you called to report them. That would break my heart too. When I have to go to a pet store I also will go get a manager and complain if I see problems going on. I hope the authorities will make them fix these problems.

I just left a complaint with the better business bureau too. I am going to keep calling the animal control until they DO SOMETHING about this.

This angers me so much. I cried and cried.. is it that hard to even give them decent conditions?

I’ve been to small pet stores down in Oregon, and their conditions were decent for the rabbits.. certainly not like how I give to Chacha, but they HAD HAY TO EAT!

I don’t like pet stores. I live in puppy mill central and I hate all those stores that have puppy mill puppies crammed into tiny cages. There aren’t a ton of places around here that sell rabbits, thankfully. I mentioned on here a feed store that sells them. When we first went there, they didn’t have a lot of rabbits and they kept them in these plexi-glass playpens. They had hay, water, pellets. But later, we went back and they had a bunny explosion. I think I complained on here about these poor babies that they had just gotten in that they had in a tiny wire cage and one of them was obviously sick. =(
Unfortunately, pet stores will do what pet stores do. We can only hope that they will at least try to keep the animals in good conditions. I stopped in a pet store in another city once and the rabbits had sort of a bunny “Disney Land” set up. They were in big playpens with shredded cardboard that they were burrowing through and wooden hidey houses. They had hay, water, and pellets. I don’t know if they gave them veggies or not. I think that those were the most “pleasant” conditions I have seen a pet store keep rabbits in.

I saw a gorgeous satin angora its nails were horrendously long.  I offered to trim then and the matts off her coat.   Oh no the vet does it.

Next week we went back and the nails were trimmed but not the matts.   I made mention of that and don’t know what came of that probably got it done.

Haven’t been able to get back there.

I received an email back from a very big animal rescue in my state. They said that they will be sending an investigator out to the store, and also recommended that I contact a rabbit shelter in a nearby city to let them know what is going on.
