I’m surprised that more guinea pigs were bought (and then surrended, sad) as a result of a crappy CGI movie. I didn’t see that movie, but I’m assuming it was terrible. I don’t think the producers are thinking about the consequences of their movies, I agree a disclaimer would be a good idea. They should also link to information about the true cost of pets and responsible adoption from their movie website. Does anyone know of an email for the public relations department of the production company, some respectful messages with these suggestions might put it on their radar.
A good example of how a movie can make a difference is Babe, remember when it released (long time ago!) and there was a wave of kids becoming vegetarian? It really brought it into the public consciousness a little more. Even though the movie is basically vegetarian propaganda I’m not sure if that was the primary goal, I think the main goal was to make money off a cute talking animal picture. However, the lead actor James Cromwell is a longtime vegetarian and animal rights activist, so who knows. In their case they didn’t have to worry about increased numbers of unwanted pets since they were all farm animals
