Hi everyone!

 

I’m a new member and I’d like to introduce myself and my bunnies. My name is Lisa and I have two mini-rexes: Bunneh and Bazinga.

I am a newish bunny owner as I have had Bunneh for two years this July. I got him from a pet store on a whim – my son is allergic to cats and dogs so I’ve always been leery of furry cuties for fear of his reaction. I don’t know why this time was different, I saw this little 8 week old guy in the pen and I was smitten! So off home we go and my son decided to name him “Lord Fuzzybuns McMugglepants”. Muggle for short. A week later to the recommended vet in my area.

I was floored when the vet revealed how terribly sick my little chocolate bunny was. Mites on his back, an eye infection, an ear infection and a respiratory infection. Plus he was underweight. No wonder I wanted to take him home and thank goodness I did. I nursed him back to health and got him altered at about 16 weeks I think. 

He became his sweet and yet slightly skittish self and his name somehow morphed into “Bunneh”. Probably because I would always say to him “Who’s my good little bunneh!” 

This past fall I returned to school full time and I felt guilty that I wasn’t home with my baby Bunneh as much as I wanted. I decided to get him a friend.

I wanted another mini-rex (who knew my son wasn’t allergic to mini-rexes, talk about fortuitous!) so I got one from a local breeder. Bazinga enters the picture. She’s altered as well (as of end of Jan 2013) and thinks she’s alpha bun! We call her Zinga for short, but lately I’ve taken to calling her “Gurgles” because whenever she drinks water her stomach makes the most hilarious sounds. LOL!

Anyway, I love my buns even though they aren’t the snuggly type –  *pout* – and they were until recently completely free roaming in my apartment.

Welcome Lisa! Your buns are beautiful – and how fortunate for Bunneh to have been adopted and nursed to health! And Zinga definitely looks like the boss in her pic 🙂

Your last statement intrigues me – as my husband has this theory, that free range buns are less likely to enjoy being held – because they’re used to being free…where caged buns welcome being held, because they associate it with being free/freed from the cage. I wonder if there might be some truth to his theory.

I’m fortunate to have my bunnies in my life – they keep me going. I like to lie on the floor next to them when they are loafing or flopping. I feel a sense of peace being near them.

Zinga is totally the boss (so she thinks), but that picture is the day after her surgery – I cropped out the rest. Poor thing was all zoned out on drugs.

I think your theory has merit – at least in the case of free roaming bunnies. Being held is anathema to bunnies in the wild, so I totally get how they don’t like it. These are my first bunnies, so I can’t speak for how they behave when caged. But its an interesting thing to think about.
