› Forum › THE LOUNGE › WELCOME ! › Hi! Meet Zeus!
Hi everyone! I am a new bunny owner, and this is my new boy, Zeus!
Zeus sniffing my orange pop, haha!
Zeus investigating my pile of “stuff”. I just moved into a new apartment and haven’t finished unpacking yet.
Zeus enjoying a scritch, he has pretty long hair!
Zeus about to hop off, he’s mid-takeoff here!
Zeus is a 2 year old, and I’m unsure what breed he is. Any ideas? I was hold he was a Holland Lop, but he seems way too big to be a pure Holland Lop. Either way, he’s a great boy!
oh my goodness!!! he is soooooooo handsome!!!!! SQEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE….going to grab my bunny napping kit…brb!!
i do believe holland lops are not the dwarf breed but the bigger of the 2 like the rex and mini rex…?? i tihnk!

Hahaha, thank you! I think he’s very cute, but of course I’m biased.
From what I understand, Mini Lops are bigger than Holland Lops. Holland Lops are the smallest Lops, I think. But I could be wrong, I’m still learning!
Holland lops are the smaller, mini lops larger. Weird, isn’t it

Agreed!
I’m kind of thinking he’s a mini lop, but I’m not sure.

This one looks like your boy
Then again, he looks like a holland lop too!

Maybe he’s a Holland/Mini Lop cross!
How much does he wiegh?
His weight will tell you what he is. Mini lops get to be around 6-8 lbs and Holland Lops are 4-5 lbs.

I’m not sure how much he weighs, I’ll find out whenever he goes into the vet for a checkup. I’m trying to find a rabbit-savvy vet in my area right now.
He’s gorgeous! I think he’s a broken chocolate holland lop. I’m curious to know how much he weighs, but his face and ears don’t look like a mini lop at all – they’re very holland. I don’t think it’s likely he’s a mix of mini and holland either, but I suppose it’s possible.
It’s really hard to tell how big he is in the pictures, but I guess there’s a possibility that he is a small-ish French lop. They have the same face and ear structure that he does, though they are generally 10lbs+ which he doesn’t seem to be.
A holland will weigh 2-5lbs while a mini will weigh 5-7lbs.

Interesting, thanks for the info! So you think he’s a pure Holland Lop? He just looks so big to me, to be considered a relatively “small” bunny.. but I’m also used to guinea pigs, so.
I love his color too! I didn’t know rabbits came in that dark shade of brown.
He’s cute. It’s really not that important as to whether he’s a Holland or a Mini or any other breed – well, we know he’s a lop :~)

Hahaha, yep, that’s for sure.
He does look like a holland, but it’s really hard to tell his weight from the pics. They can get up to 5lbs (check out the cuddlebuns thread – Comet is almost 5lbs, Chubs is 4lbs, and my Otto is 4.3lbs). Here’s a picture of my Hannah, a mini lop, for reference. Mini lops have pointier faces and longer thinner ears generally. And if he is bigger than 5lbs, I think it may be from French lop influence since he doesn’t look much like a mini to me. Who knows though! I could be totally wrong and he could be a mini lop with a rounded face.
I thought of another holland vs. mini difference that might help place his breed. Does he sit upright for long periods of time? Like this:
Hollands tend to sit naturally like this and will fall asleep sitting up (not all do, but many). Mini lops will sit like this, but not for long periods of time because their bodies are longer.
I just love his coloring though. It’s so pretty and his markings are beautiful.

Yeah his face is more “smushed” than your girl’s face. I’ll have to go look up a French lop, I don’t know what they look like!

Yes he sits like that a lot. Whenever he grooms he sits like that, and just hangs out in his cage sitting like that.
Yeah, I’ve noticed Hannah will sit up like that for a minute, and she’ll groom like that, but she never relaxes in that position. Otto will sit up like that for an hour at a time while he sleeps. I’ve noticed the mini lops at the rescue also don’t sit upright like that, so I think it’s a holland thing (and a nethie thing, I think)
Here’s a few pics I found of French Lop on google, it’s interesting that a ton of them were really similar in color and markings.
I do think his face is still a bit different shape than these guys, but otherwise I think he looks similar.

He hasn’t fallen asleep like that, he likes to sleep super-stretched out. But I think he also is just so unaccustomed to having the ROOM to stretch out, he’s doing it all the time now. In his previous cage, if he stretched out, his face was smashed into the bars on one end of his cage, and his feet were smashed against the bars on the other end.
Aww, poor guy. I’m sure he does like stretching out!
I’ve seen pictures of frenchies with faces like his too. The more smushed look. And you’re right about the pattern. I haven’t seen many hollands with that all over blanket of color, but it’s common in minis and frenchies.

He still has some habits from his old cage too, which was bedded everywhere. In the old cage he’d dig like crazy to get rid of the shavings in one spot, then lay on the bare cage pan. Now he’s in a big dog crate with a litterbox, and he still “digs” the plastic crate pan before he lays down, just out of habit I’m assuming. He also periscopes ALL THE TIME in his new cage, because he was barely able to even sit up in his old cage without hitting his head. Now he’s a periscoping fiend.
So perhaps he’s a cross of Holland and French? I don’t think he’s 100% French Lop, I think he’s too small (even though I don’t know his weight). I’ll be really curious to see how much he weighs, I may go buy a scale and weigh him myself if I get too impatient!
He could be a cross. Or I guess he could be a different looking mini lop, if his weight falls into that range. Hard to say – he doesn’t quite fit any of the breeds 100%. I’m going to look around at some more mini lops to see if any look like him.
My bunnies both dig at the corner of their cage before laying down too. It’s so funny. Not sure why they do that, but I’ve talked to other lop owners whose buns do the same (but not as many uppy eared bunnies seem to do it). Not sure if that’s just coincidence based on who I’ve talked to though.
I just remembered that we used to have a girl at the rescue who reminds me of your boy. Her face wasn’t as long and pointy as some minis, and she was quite bit (bigger than your guy I think) but not French lop sized. She had a tatoo in her ear, so I’m assuming she came from a breeder, but I wasn’t quite sure what she was. I always assumed mini lop.
Mini lops actually are not meant to have the pointier faces. The standard (when showing) is to have a more rounded face much like the holland, just not as exaggerated. Here is a link to a breeder site for mini lops: http://www.sunnybrookrabbitry.net/MLBucks.html Her mini lops look a lot like your guy.
Cool find Sullysmom! I haven’t seen mini lops with rounded faces, but I’m sure the ones I’m seeing are not the best of breed winners 😛
And there was that one girl in the rescue who must have come from a breeder and she did have the rounded face.
eta: They look just like Zeus. I guess there’s your answer! Did the old owner know where he came from? I’m guessing it was a breeder.

Hm, he does look a lot like a few of those rabbits! They have the smushed face like he does.
I guess it all comes down to weight then, but from the pictures it kind of looks like he’s over 5lbs.

He’s the size of a small cat, if that helps any. And when totally stretched out, he’s probably about two and a half feet long.
When I first saw him, I told my fiance he’s the same size as my parents’ smallest cat. Maybe I’ll ask my mum to weigh the smallest kitty for me and see how much she weighs!!!
Sounds like a mini lop then! He didn’t intially look that big to me, but looking at the pictures again he’s pretty big next to your hand.

Yeah I need to take a picture of him next to something that could show his size, I know the pics don’t make it easy to figure out how big he is!
So cat-size = mini lop size?
Yeah, pretty much! I think cats are 6-8lbs? I’ve never had one, so I’m not sure … haha. But that would be my guess. And that’s about the standard mini lop size.
We did a thread a while back where we took pictures of our buns next to rulers and soda/beer cans. I think it started because we wanted to see how small Monkey really is!
Oh and as for his previous owner, yes she got him from a breeder, but I didn’t get any more info then that. Honestly I just wanted to get him out of there and run before she changed her mind or something.

Haha, that’s a good idea! I don’t have any cans but next time I do I’ll save one.
I just sent Zeus’ picture to a friend who used to breed and is pretty knowledgable. Her comment was “That’s a holland head and stance, but he looks big!”
Lol. At least I feel less crazy now 😛

I got it! He’s a new breed! He’s a Gigantic Holland Lop!
His chocolate-y colour is wonderful!

Thank you!
I think he really looks like a french lop. Maybe not 100%. A LOT of rabbits are mixed breed. I would guess the same though. Maybe French Lop and Mini Lop. He is a breed of his own! LOL CUTENESS!!!

Yeah like you said, maybe he’s a mix of French Lop and Mini Lop. Who knows!
Zeus is beautiful. My Holland Lop, Bella has smaller features than Zeus and is only 4 pounds. I think he may be a Mini.

Yeah we’re thinking he’s either Mini Lop, or Mini/French Lop cross.
if only there was a way you could be a dna test on them to find out like you can do on your dog and it will tell you how much of what breed(s) your dog is…and all they do is take a q-tip and whipe the inside of the mouth. i bet a lot of people would have it done!
he sure is a handsome boy!!!
