I’ve had my Netherland dwarf for about 8 months and my standard Rex for about 4, both are much spoilt house rabbits.
It’s really weird how little people know about rabbits, have you guys ever heard any really weird misconceptions?

I don’t know what you’re talking about AH. Our bunnies are sweet as pie and love cuddles. Easy to care for too! :p

Must be a Henry bunny misconception! Lol

There are many bunny-misconceptions. A common one is that bunnies are supposed to eat carrots. Like carrots are the basis of their diet. It’s not true, carrot should be fed sparingly, as a treat, it’s high in sugar.

People also often assume rabbits are rodents. They’re not. They’re lagomorphs.

And then the one that Andi and BM are touching upon: Rabbits are thought to be low-maintenance pets, good as “starter”-pets, suitable for young children. Fluffy and docile and cuddly. That is completely wrong. Rabbits are actually quite belligerent. They are very physically fragile, but very strong-minded. And their universal motto is “Ask not what your bunny can do for you, ask what you can do for your bunny” – and ask it often. And then obey.

I would suspect that what the average person knows about the care of rabbits is mostly incorrect. This includes personality, housing, diet, general care etc. Part of it is pop culture and how rabbits are presented in cartoons, movies, television etc. Slowly but surely education of correct care is getting there, but it doesn’t help those who think they know what they are doing and so never look up how to care for them because they assume they know it.

the weirdest one for me is spaying/neutering the amount of people who are like does it matter they only live a couple years, which is why they only live a couple years.

Ya spay and neuter your dogs\cats what’s the difference with a rabbit

Weird misconceptions…yes. Basically everything I was told about rabbits was wrong when I got my first bun. First misconception:

                    1. They’re naturally friendly and cuddly.
                    – No, not always. Especially if they’re unaltered and therefore hormonal and territorial. Also most rabbits don’t enjoy being picked up or held – they aren’t human babies.
                    2. They’re “easy” to care for
                    – Not really, especially with their extremely touchy GI tract. Also bunny-proofing an area isn’t an exact science.
                    3. They’re “cheap”
                    – yeah, maybe, if you plan on never altering them or bringing them to the vet…and if they never destroy anything in the house =) My last bunny easily cost me $2000+ in the 4 years I had her (between vet visits, food, hay, pee’d-on rugs, and chewed up electronics).

These are the top three misconceptions with rabbits in my opinion, being as they’re marketed as “the perfect starter pet” for children -_-
