Hi I’m a Newbie

 Hi I’m Ariana,

 I have one domestic doe named Foxy Tail we think she is 3 years old as we rescued here from a lady whose daughter couldn’t keep her in her dorm anymore and was going to put her in the shelter if she couldn’t get rid of her soon. Foxy Tail currently lives in my step dad’s garage but is outside most of the time.  I know that she really should be inside but both of my parents say that rabbits are messy and they need to stay outside.  My parents have been in a long distance relationship for almost 3 years but we are getting ready to move into a house that we just finished building.  Since I live with my mom who lives 2 hours from my step dad I haven’t really gotten to litter train or spay Foxy because I’m never there and my parents don’t see the point of spaying a rabbit.  Besides Foxy Tail  I have 3 cats Tiger who was a stray that adopted us and shortly after she came to us she had kittens so we got to keep 1 kitten her name is Midnight.  Tiger and Midnight prefer to spend most of their time outside and they frequently bring us their “rent” a.k.a dead moles, voles, etc.  Porkchop is my third cat he is an indoor cat because his 2 front paws are declawed.  He is usually hiding from everyone unless he wants his daily head rub.  By the way all of the cats are fixed.  I am fairly new to rabbits and need some help. 

   I personally like to play soccer for my travel team and play piano. Thanks for reading

Spaying a female rabbit is essential to her good health. Unspayed female rabbits have an 80% chance of developing uterine cancer. Spaying eliminates that risk. It also reduces odors, makes it easier to litter train, and can eliminate undesirable behaviors which makes them much better indoor pets. I believe someone mentioned you trying to get an indoor trial with your bunny and I think that’s a great idea. Just make sure you are hyper vigilant about cleaning so they can’t use mess as a reason to put her back outdoors. I know other younger members have asked for a spay/neuter surgery as a Chrismas/Holiday or Birthday present so would something like that be an option?

I know what’s it like to see rabbits as different kinds of pets than your parents. My father and grandfather both raised rabbits for years, but they weren’t necessarily sold as pets. My mom also had rabbits and one Flemish giant that she rescued was paper trained so they kept it indoors. But because of my mom’s hay and bunny fur allergies I had outdoor bunnies for most of my growing up years. Don’t get me wrong, everyone is bunny crazy, but most people still see them as livestock or similar to hamsters rather than house pets. What changed in my household was when my grandfather rescued a house bunny who was litter trained. No one could stomach putting that tiny adorable lop outside when he was used to being a house pet so he got to stay indoors. I was 13 at the time and had recently moved my bedroom to the basement so he wouldn’t bug my mom’s allergies as much (I am allergic to hay and bunny fur too by the way lol). After Pippin I never had another outdoor bunny. I made sure to replace anything he chewed and kept his cage SUPER clean and in my room so my parents didn’t mind. Now I am all grown up and moved out. I have just had my first bunny at a vet experience (no one really does that in the area I live in and growing up if one of my rabbits got sick we used the home remedies passed down for generations to heal them). It is hard to change the prevalent view of rabbits as livestock to them as house pets. My advice would be to look up some statistics of the importance of spaying and also say that it will make her cleaner. And definitely offer to do some extra chores until you can pay it off or ask for it as a gift.
